becoming more and more clear that these entities are truggling to keep your personal data safe from cyberhackersan we do to protect ourselves? joining me now is a digital security company and author of the book, the privacy in the age of big data. there it is right there. thank you for coming on the show tonight. i understand that you say that you haven't been hacked, just wait. >> it is one of those things where unfortunately for all of us there is an unprecedented amount of data being collected and that data will be hacked this includes your personal information that will be on the underground economy and it will be sold in be used. gerri: people don't realize that there is a whole underground economy out there. people out there trying to get any piece of your data at any cost. at the end of the day we are the ones who wilpay the price. >> i think data collection. sometimes it's the things you don't think about. people realize what you over share on facebook, what you might post online, they understand that and they know that they can control that. but they don't realize, for example, at targe

russia is the number one source for some of these cyberattacks and cyberhackers. >> off the shelf hardwareoftware? >> in stores, online that you and i would never see that are available to the hackers. they find this stuff. that stuff was online since the beginning of last year at the cost of $2,000. think of the millions millions d millions that stores and banks and consumers lose. >> how do we protect ourself? >> we found your information changes hands some 12 times in a routine credit card transsection. >> 12 times? >> so first, don't use a credit card. use cash. the deb -- debit card does not have the protections, and check your account. and an expert says check it daily, and that's a lot to do. i think people should have fewer cars, check and make sure nobody is using them right now. >> amex, visa, debit card. that's all you've need. >> you can do with less. >> if you need to rent a card you need a a credit card. >> at least one. i it's not a bad thing to have a credit card or use a credit card. just do ill intelligently. >> good thing to pay it off. >> every month. >> facebook's days

insider inside the company who somehow aided and abetted an attack or an outside attack entirely, a cyberhack from an unknown assailant. we don't have enough information to figure that out, largely because companies, although a lot of them have gotten a lot better at disclosure and target is getting points today for coming forward with this information, companies by and large aren't subject to a whole lot of federal regulation about whether or not they have to tell the public and investors about data breaches. there's a patchwork of state level regulations about this, all of which are slightly different, but overall, there is not a whole lot forcing companies on the federal and national level to come forward here and give all the specifics about what happened, and companies can be very reticent to do that because if they have a soft underbelly of their data, they don't want to publicize that and put it out there for other hackers who might take advantage of it. >> thank you very much for this. we should really let our viewers know that this data breach is one of the biggest in u.s. history. s

says it was the victim of a cyberhack attack.ail accounts using stolen user names and passwords. yahoo! says it has reset passwords and text messages were sent alerting users to suspicious activity. >> pennsylvania man now under arrest accused of selling heroin to undercover officers. this is the first arrest in a new crackdown over heroin. a deadly mix that's responsible for the deaths of nearly two dozen users just in the past week. cnn's rosa flores has more for you. >> reporter: it sells under harmless sounding names like theraflu and bud ice but the white powder inside these one-inch packets is deadly, linked to killing at least 22 people in western pennsylvania in the past week. >> i just finished filling the heroin. i walked into the bathroom and went on to the ground. >> i overdosed on it and almost died. it took his friend dying to scare him back into rehab at the greenbrier center near pittsburgh. you know you can do, 7, 8, 9 bags. with theraflu and made me feel i'm not invincible nirm anymore. >> reporter: the first re
