cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> cydney, thank you for that. let's go to mitch blocker mitch blacher in our newsroom. >> we traced rahami's records back to his 18th birthday. he appears to have been living in the u.s., in new jersey. >> reporter: the man law enforcement say is at the center of a mass bombing conspiracy is 28 years old. he's believed to be the man seen in this surveillance taken saturday night in new york's chelsea neighborhood. ahmad khan rahami was born in afghanistan and naturalized as a u.s. citizen. he came to the u.s. in 1995, seeking asylum. it was granted in 2011. senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news rahami and his family have traveled to pakistan and presumably afghanistan multiple times in the last decade. >> i do not have information yet to show what the path of radicalization was. >> reporter: rahami was a college student at middlesex county college in new jersey from 2010 to 2012, a criminal justice major, but never graduated. during his college years he lived in perth amboy, new jersey. his only brush wit

cydney long is on the phone with us. cydney, this is new information you're telling us, a lyndon police officer was shot. and i know, they're moving you back and it's a little chaotic right now. tell us what you know about that again? >> reporter: well, tracy, i just asked some of the police officers and i saw one of the police officers happened to be with lyndon, and it was a female sergeant, and she was walking back to her car, and i just said, sergeant, i said, how's your officer doing? and she said, so far, so far he's all right. so as you mentioned, it's a very fluid, a very active scene, as we can see in the distance, tracy, some of those evidence markers of the casings on the ground. we did speak to a witness, rodney, before we had walked several blocks down closer to the scene. of course, we're getting pushed back now. rodney said that he could see all of the police running down to this location. again, it's elizabeth avenue and maple avenue, in lyndon. it is approximately ten minutes from where the fbi was searc

cydney long is in linden after the suspect was captured. we begin with cydney. >> reporter: jackie, he was sound asleep on the front stoop of a local bar, about five blocks from where we're standing. this is as close as investigators will allow us to be. that is were the suspect, ahmad khan rahami, took shelter this morning. police responded to a 911 call, they tried to wake him, and that's when the gun fight began. >> i did hear the gun shots. pow, pow, pow. >> reporter: an exchange of gunfire between 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami landed the bombing suspect on a stretcher, bleeding from his shoulder. listen as witnesses with cellphones in hand described the moment. >> man, it's crazy. >> reporter: rahami, police say, wasn't willing to go down without a fight. he fired at two linden police officers hitting one of them in a bullet proof vest. >> he was sleeping right across the street from where my truck was parked. >> reporter: long time linden resident michael heard the gunshots as he left for work. he quickly returned home to his street,

nbc reporter cydney long joins us live with the latest on the investigation. police said the motive was armed robbery? >> it was. these officers witnessed a group of three men hold up another group of men on the sidewalk beside caesar's parking garage. beside caesar's parking garage. when police got out of the car that's when bullets started that's when bullets started flying and everyone took off running. surveillance video paints only parts of the picture. these pictures show three men following another group down the sidewalk. detectives won't tell us who is who, but of the six one is dead and two are charged with attempted murder and the others were innocent victims of robbery. >> i'm happy they got the guys because i'm out here walking. >> for visitors shopping and enjoying the holiday weekend didn't realize but say they are playing for the atlantic city police officer shot in the head. >> that's sad, that's sad. at the end of it all they're here to protect us. >> the wounded officer's partner returned fire, striking one of the gunmen who has since been i

nbc10 south jersey bureau reporter cydney long is live in atlantic city with the latest developments. >> reporter: well, denise, i can tell you that police officer is out of surgery this morning after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. but he does remain in critical condition. and now police are asking that everyone out there take a close look at surveillance video of two groups of men they say it will lead them to who pulled the trigger and why. as many as 14 evidence markers pinpoint where shell casings landed on arkansas avenue knew besides the szczurs parking garage when two atlantic at the police officers responding to a group of men involved in criminal activity got out of their car, one of the officers was shot. >> they was just shooting over here at the outlet about two or three days ago. now, this is like, it's not even safe to walk the streets no more. broad daylight. nighttime. >> reporter: the other officer fired back striking one of the gunmen as the group took off running. > that suspect was found about a black and a half away on missouri and pacific avenues. he was

cydney long was in the courtroom. >> the two suspects had some company today. >> reporter: indeed they did. they had the eyes and stares of as many as 75 to 100 law enforcement officers to the point the court had to turn some away. the wife who is expecting their third child is at the hospital. here in the courtroom it was the men and women in blue that picked up this task. for the first time since they allegedly fired multiple rounds on two police officers, demetrius cross and chisholm answered to attempted murder charges before a judge. and before a courtroom jam packed with dozens of law enforcement officers from 14 south jersey departments. cross cried in court. it was an armed robbery, police say, that led to a shootout by the seeds ar's casino parking garage between cross, chisholm and police. damon collapsed and died and returned fire by police. >> i'm more concerned with the family of our officer. >> reporter: matt rogers is overwhelmed by the officer and his family. he's thankful for the officers who came today to see the defendants face to face. not everyone got to see them i
