cynthia koons -- significantly before. cynthia koons joins us with more. uneven has this process been in terms of geographical spread? cynthia: it is pretty remarkable how the rollout has been. some states have been asked ordinary, like new mexico has 30% of the population has at least one shot, but then you look at georgia has 16%, so it is really surprising. it is just very interesting how some states have had really successful early campaigns, and others are still working to catch up. but the early days were very different than what we are entering into. in the early days, there was a lot of supply constraint, and that is very quickly going to be rectified, particularly because of the j&j approval and the agreement that merck made to produce their vaccine. think some of what we saw in the early days of the vaccine rollout, with the trouble getting appointments and just a lack of available appointments or a lack of ability for people to get shots based on their conditions, is going to change quite rapidly, probably with even -- probably within even the n

thank you for joining us, cynthia.mericans and pacific islanders, is it all attributed to covid? >> well, this is not a new issue for our community, but we certainly did see an unprecedented surge certainly in my lifetime that was sparked by covid. as you reported, we have 3,800 incidents. we know that's just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what asian americans are encountering all across america. >> given what we've seen in the last year with fears of this virus being tied into the hate crimes of asian americans and pacific islanders, can we condemn it and make sure people know this virus has nothing to do with your race? >> first, i should have started out by just expressing our deepest condolences to the surviving family members who are grieving and mourning the loss of their loved ones. yes, i think that there can be plenty done by our elected officials standing by our community at this time that's reeling and living on the edge of fear of being attacked as they're going about their daily business in public spac

i want to turn to cynthia. since last march, your group, stop aapi hate, has collected nearly 3,800 self-reports of verbal abuse, harassment, physical assault. women reported 68% of these incidents. i would imagine, as is usually the case with surveys like these, there's probably a significant amount that does not go reported. the hearing today, what would you like to see come out of it? >> well, first of all, thank you for having me on the show. i'm really pleased that we were invited. our partners there representing stop aapi hate and so many community organizations who as you pointed out have been working on this issue for decades. it's important that today that we listen to what communities have been recommending, which includes really, i think, disavowing and condemning anti-asian racism and acknowledging that this has been a part of our history. it's important also to back that up with specific actions. for many of us, it means supporting community-based safety initiatives that we have been working on for

bloomberg cynthia koons joins us now -- bloomberg's cynthia koons joins us now.hrough what has happened, and why it is so important that this data came a month ago. cynthia: as we know, this is all happening very fast and in an unprecedented manner. what happened here was astra released their results as they saw fit, and that was data gathered through february 17. the data other companies released was even older than that because their drugs have since been authorized, although they are continuing to update the fda as data is rolling out. but the team has said that data was not as current as they would like, and that particularly pertains to the variants that are now circulating throughout the u.s., so data that is more current would reflect how their vaccine is working against some of the more prevalent strains of the virus. so astra says they will hurry up and get that data. it is a bit of an interesting phenomenon. we usually don't see the nih saying this sort of thing publicly. if there has been one thing consistent among the astra story, it has been kind of

nbc legal and investigative correspondent cynthia mcfadden got a look at vaccination efforts in uganda began vaccinating in uganda. cynthia, our intrepid traveler tell us about your journey. >> it is 7:30 at night here and we can barely see lake victoria behind me and we are in uganda, as you say and we came to witness a small, but significant part of a very major international issue and that is the rollout of this vaccine. what we were able to see is going from island to island carrying vaccine with us the joy on the faces of the people as they saw that vaccine coming. i was -- they allowed me to carry the cooler of 40 doses of astrazeneca into the community. unicef is the coordinator of all of this here in uganda and around the world. as you know, this covax operation intended to vaccinate 20% of the world's poorest people in the hundred poorest countries. they've had to pull that back, and they haven't been able to meet that goal. they're now hoping by the end of the year to vaccinate just 3% of the world's poorest people. so this is a little window into what that effort looks like.
