dalton: we need to do everything we can. >> moderator: cynthia dill? dill: i don't think there is a direct correlation between the abilities of the public and your track record in terms of numbers and businesses. but to address the question, two thirds of united states senate are millionaires. the bush tax cuts are in large part because of the debt and deficit. people succumbing to insatiable greed is what led to the fate of so many families. i believe there is a direct correlation between their are only 17 women in the united states senate and 20% of women live in poverty. i believe there is a lot that is captured by big money and the fact that one in five children are without health care. >> moderator: steve woods? woods: beginning an answer is education. we have a large infrastructure here in maine. maine is the size of many other states combined. we have a little economic engine. it is nobody's fault. it is the way that state is laid out. the answer is for us to continue. years ago, people competed in commerce and we had cars and air transportation.

so they don't go into careers that pay them. >> moderator: cynthia dill. dill: the jobs report indicates that jobs are up, manufacturing jobs at an all-time high and consumer confidence is up. so the economy is taking a turn in terms of the barrier between skills and open job positions, we have to first and foremost start with early oeducation. we have to support our higher institution office learning by expanding pehl grants and making student loans manageable. people talked about how colleges can actually apply to a job. we have to support legislation like the veteran jobs corps which was the victim of a filibuster, so we have to get after the problem in washington and that's the filibuster raul. but government can play a role by focusing and funding, retraining programs, making college accessible to more people, and i think certainly putting an emphasis on education. >> moderator: thank you, cynthia dill. we'll be right back after a short break. >> moderator: welcome back. 2012 u.s. senate debate. in this segment of the debate each candidate will answer

i will start with cynthia dill. dill: ague. i have a 94-year-old grandmother who only lives on social security. i know so many people in maine in america rely on it. you can thank the democrats for social security. what i would do to shore up the finances is raise the income tax currently at $110,000 a year or so. if we raise the $250,000, we can't ensure it going forward. we can also tax retiree reduction plan and gradually increase the contributions that people make into the system. currently, employees and employers contribute a social insurance program and if we all contribute us a little bit more, the program can be found for future generations. it's critically important. especially for women because they contribute. less because of making less wages, it helps people to live longer and it is something that i pledge to protect and strengthen. dalton: i will not support any legislation for those in favor of privatization of social security. i will tell you why. fifteen years ago when i lost my first wife, my two young childr
