. ♪ >> cynthia miller interest joins us -- idris joins us for discussion on white supremacy in the unitedtates. fellow at the center for analysis of the radical right. explain some of the terms we hear in this discussion, white supremacy, white nationalists, neo-nazi. what is the difference? guest: everyone is confused about this. no one has a complete agreement on it. your question is well-placed. refer to the far right as a spectrum of ideologies that includes white supremacist extremism but also a range of other kinds of systems oneliefs and the far right spectrum including antigovernment. what we have been talking about is white supremacist extremism. that is an ideology that most people understand to include dehumanizing kinds of -- kinds of racism and homophobia. two parts, ades sense of existential dread. you have been hearing the great replacement theory part of the manifesto in christchurch and reportedly in el paso. they believe that they are accident -- existentially at threat, going to be replaced by immigrants, that there will be a white genocide. the third doctrine is accele

we can now speak to professor cynthia miller idris from the centre of analysis for the radical right.ention until recently. i think that is changing over the last four, five months. let‘s try to explore why these incidents might happen. gun control is always an issue that comes up at this time, president trump has said democrats and republicans must come together to get strong background gun checks. will that help? we definitely need gun control in the us. it is clearly legislation which is far past its due. but i think we‘ve seen from christchurch and 0slo over the last several years, that gun control alone doesn‘t solve the problem. i think we have a much bigger problem about the escalation of far right violence and how these attacks are inspiring each other. 0nline, how they are planning, and invoking the same kinds of narratives about the imminent threat posed by immigrants to native—born communities, or white communities. and that narrative gets reinforced by political leaders, including our president in the us, by using language like invasion and incursion, in ways thatjust rein
