why cystic fibrosis affects few patients. it's priced at $250,000 a year, all together, analysts estimate vertex's cystic fibrosis medicines could bring in more than $5 billion. >> before we go, you mentioned pricing, but there's a lot of pricing pressure, so the industry is trying to rein in its costs, about you what companies stand to lose the most as that process continues? >> that's an important question, one of the biggest issues on the industry. from diabetes to as ma to hepatitis-c, one area in particular, drugs for macular degeneration. it's the most common cause in blindness in the elderly, and there's competing drugs, and they each drew almost $2 billion in sales last year, but another drug that doctors are using avastin, it's approved for cancer, and words in the same way, but in a dose eye doctors would use, it costs a fraction of much. instead of about $2,000, it's about $50 a dose. regen ron stock took a hit last week, as pressure from insurers to use lower-cost options mount. it's just one example in many on th

she's one of 30,000 americans living with cystic fibrosis or cf. >> when i was diagnosed i was 12. >>oday, she's 37. it causes mucus to build up in the lungs. managing it requires hours of treatment every day. in april, a lung infection send liz to the hospital for a week and got nicole thinking. >> maybe i could bring people together to run to celebrate with. >> reporter: she created outrun 38. what she thought would be a small facebook group, friends running to support liz. that day, 1,000 people joined. >> there i am in the hospital with all these people, people i know, people i don't know who are saying i just ran five miles for you, liz. go team liz, you got this. i mean just crying, like you can't imagine what that feels like to feel, you know, sick and struggling and have all this support. >> reporter: the initial goal, log 3800 miles in time for liz's 38th birthday this fall. liz outrunning the odds of survival of cf. they hit that milestone on day nine. >> people responded immediately. this community of friendship really brought people together. >> reporter: people like jenni

that's the most important gauge for cystic fibrosis patients.ercentage points improvement from baseline compared to placebo for the patients in these two studies. also seeing a reduced rate of pulmonary exacerbation due to the problems that put patients into the hospital, put them on antibiotics. this is huge news for vertex pharmaceuticals. the stock could have gone to 100 on good news, down to 40 on bad news. currently i believe is halted. we should look to see what those shares do when they open back up. >> it is halted. at this point, so -- and we don't have an indication on where that could open. that would be great news for a lot of reasons. that's a nasty disease that we've had very little success fighting other than just the, you know, trying to clear people's lungs, but you know, it's heartbreak and a lot of people i think don't live full lives, obviously, and parents, gut wrenching cystic fibrosis. but that could be good. and the $15 billion, almost $16 billion, vertex made its a lot of its money within the hiv cockta cocktail. >> oh,

out front is vertech pharmaceuticals, jumping a full 40% after reporting success with a cystic fibrosisnt. not far behind, micron technology, mu. that's gaining nearly 5%. they came out with quarterly estimates and numbers yesterday. they topped quarterly targets and forecast, better than expected sales thanks to pent-up demand for pcs. a backlog in demand also a factor in the housing market. we got new home sales soaring 18.6% in may. that's actually thest level in six years. a separate report showed that home prices rose again in april but at a slower annual pace than expected. still, both numbers were pretty darn good. and then pile this on, the conference board said consumer confidence rose to a six-year high this month. philly fed president charles plosser telling fox business in an exclusive interview that all of these good numbers add up to an economy that's improving steadily. mr. plosser sitting down with our own peter barnes -- yes, only peter -- and he said he believes interest rates should begin to rise as early as this year, not 2015. >> we're much closer to achieving our o
