really only czechoslovakia made it to world war ii. the rest had seized to be ceased to be- had democracies. we've come a very long way since then. you can worry about what happening in poland, hungary, and say democracy is in retreat and they are playing fast and loose with the constitution and rule of law. but compared with what we've experienced in the past, i don't think it's a huge amount to get worked up about. european union has many defects, but one obvious benefit is to constrain member states from stepping too far away from democratic norms. you can see that right now with poland and hungary. i think the picture is a bright one. the problems that europe is grappling with, partly demographic in nature, have to do with slow economic growth, countries like italy. i don't think they are problems that fundamentally undermine democracy. they just make it hard to run a democratic government. there's the old joke, we know the structural reforms that we have to do, we just don't know how to survive doing them. it's extremely hard to b
