now 47 years later in a new memoir titled "d.b. cooperichigan author claims he knew the infamous hijacker. >> in 2000 i told walt i suspected him of being d.b. cooper. he would not say yes or no right away, but over the next eight years, walt and i had many phone calls to slowly unravel this story of the hijacking. >> reporter: carl laurin believes without a doubt that d.b. cooper was actually a man named walter reca. laurin says reca was his best friend and a former military paratroor. in his memoir, laurin said reca ultimately confessed to being d.b. cooper releasing audio recordings he made of his friend allegedly giving details about the crime. >> i tied the money on to me, took my belt from around my waist, tied it around my raincoat, put the money in there, buttoned it all the way up to my neck. >> and put the parachute on. >> yeah. >> reporter: walter reca passed away in michigan in 2014. as for the fbi's investigation, it was suspended two years ago. the fbi will not confirm whether walter reca was ever a suspect. >> fascinating.
