d.c. police and they say they arrested this juvenile female student here shortly after noon today. she allegedly attacked a teacher inside the school. now, when we arrived, there were a number of police here. we have some video of the police here both inside the school and outside the school. the school system says there are protocols in place to make sure that this is a peaceful situation in incidents like these, they say the protocols were followed and were effective. now, as far as the teacher, no one is divulging information about the teacher nor the condition nor the nature of this alleged attack. but a number of people that we've spoke with here some students included say that there can be tension at the school that sometimes it can be a rather scary place. we'll bring you more information as we get it later on. reporting live stephen tschida, abc 7 news. leon: let's get to that developing story in new york city, the statue of liberty was evacuated and closed down for the day after u

autria: a d.c. police officer is being honored today more than a year and a half after he stopped the washington navy yard shooter. jummy: he received the congressional badge of bravery. jeanette reyes is in baltimore with the details. jeanette: in a touching ceremony this morning, officer dorian desantis accepted the congressional badge of bravery for his life saving measures during the attack. officer desantis was one of many officers who responded and he fired the shot that killed the gunman aaron alexis after taking a bullet in his vest. congressman elijah cummings chief of police talked about the bravery, quick thinking and humility of the officer. >> talk about people needing your help. trust me it's much more rewarding to help people than to be on the other side of the door. >> he is, as you can see he's very quiet and humble about everything. >> he put his life on the line and he saved so many lives. jeanette: the officer is eligible for retirement but tells me he's in no rush to leave just

now, cross was a high ranking official in the d.c. department of corrections. prosecutors say she was at her apartment on the morning of september 7th preparing to go out of town to a leadership company when dawit seyoum targeted her and killed her. clarissa davis was composed when she left the court houshgs but on the witness stand the tears came quickly as she was shown a picture of her mother carolyn cross. on september 7th, davis drove to her mom's high-rise to take her to the apartment. she became worried when she didn't answer the phone. she went into the apartment telling jurors, as she sobbed i went in and saw my mother. she was laid out in front of me and i screamed. i walked towards her and she had a plastic bag over her head and there was blood all over her head. that afternoon police spofrnded to a 911 attempted suicide call at a neighboring building. there they found dawit seyoum suffering from slashed wrists the words i am the dirty one written in blood on his bathroom wall. once at the hospital, officer james young seyoum told him, i did somethin

alison: d.c.'s council is taking heat tonight after members refused to take a vote on whether to stop those pop-up town homes in the district. a group of residents is pushing for a moratorium on oversized pop-up homes. they say ruin the nature of older established neighborhoods. instead of voting on a moratorium, though the council voted to have the zoning commission move forward on creating restrictions for pop-ups. >> after 1,000 signatures on a petition asking for a moratorium which muriel bowser has already asked for last july one would think this would have had stronger support. obviously, they're not listening to their constituents. alison: the zoning rules being considered would lower the maximum home height from 40 feet down to 35 feet. it would also limit the number of condos in the homes and require at least one be reserved for lower income residents. leon: maryland hotels and offices will soon be required to have someone call 911 without hitting additional buttons. the law rather, is nam
