everything we can get from d.c.emergency medical services at last check, it has been in a hold, a complete travel holt for the time being. usually that is precautionary and then eventually they will reallow aircraft to come in and out of the airport. if that's the case we could be double checking that at the top of the hour. generally that's when they make these assessments but as of this moment, we have a full ground stop in effect. a possible aircraft collision between an aircraft, a fixed wing aircraft, a plane, and possibly a helicopter. that was one report. we also have a separate report that is just the one aircraft that went down. i did mention a number. it's a fairly large number. there have been some reports as many as 60 people could have been involved in the downing of this aircraft and that means we could be looking at possibly dozens of individuals, both alive and possibly perished in the water. it is cold, it is dangerous and a massive response. we are keeping an eye on it and as i get more information

joining me now is greater d.c.jamie lynn, who witnessed from her own home some of the frantic search and rescue efforts by first responders. jamie lynn, thank you so much for joining us. you live near reagan airport. what is it like there right now? >> so right now it is still a very active scene. i'm still hearing just as much, if not more noise from emergency response specifically. now, i've heard quite an uptick in the number of aircraft over the area. so just assuming that there's more helicopters assisting in those search and rescue efforts. >> now, i know you said you didn't hear or see the actual collision, but when did you realize something was wrong? >> it was it was a normal wednesday. and i went to our local arlington. arlington community facebook group, where our neighbors will often post news. and i saw that the most recent post was in a crash, and i rubbed my eyes thinking, like, here i look out my window because we have a direct line of sight to the airport where just a couple of hundred yards away a

this flight pattern is seen oftentimes when you live in d.c. this was a standard flight pattern last night as well. >> reporter: the main runway at reagan national, runway 1, is the nation's busiest, with more than 800 daily takeoffs and landings. the direct flight from wichita to dca coming into runway 33 had only been operating for a year. more than 300 first responders working through the night, pulling remains from the river. >> do i think this was preventable? absolutely. >> tom, we've learned more t th morning about the identity of some of the victims on board, including young figure skaters, in some cases with their parents. what can you share with us? >> reporter: absolutely heart breaking. the boston skating club announcing six members have been lost. and their names are jinna han, jin han the mother. spencer lane. molly lane, also a mother. vadim and shishkova. this will continue be an on going recovery 27 victims having been pulled from the water. the army is also saying the army secretary -- sorry, the department of defense secretar

a d.c.ice official told cbs that police and fire department divers continue to search water for survivors. >> our fire department, d.c. fire and ems, supported by fire departments and police departments from across the washington metropolitan region are executing a rescue operation in the potomac river. they are working diligently in very dark and cold conditions, cold water, to execute this rescue operation. >> we noticed the planes start having irregular patterns, and they all kind of dispersed from their regular landing patterns. and then we looked up in the sky before that and we saw these white flare. we didn't really think much of it until we saw the fire trucks start going out to the tarmac and the police cars and the police boats. >> reporter: in a belief statement, american airlines said it is aware of reports of an incident and that it will provide information as it becomes available. the national transportation safety board will lead the investigation along with the faa. president

d.c. officials determined to recover every victim under the water. whatever it takes. >> yes, we expect to recover all of the bodies. that's why our teams are still working. we're going to have to work with the salvage company to do some of that work and one last thing i'll mention that we learned from this press conference. >> the ntsb said, of course, they're doing this work for the flying public and the safety of the flying public, but they also do this work to get answers for family members of the victims. the ntsb board member saying there are 100 family members in the area now receiving briefings. just again, another illustration of the toll taken on the river, just not too far from where we are right now. >> and they also. >> made. >> the point. >> that they expect to begin lifting some. >> of the. >> debris out of the potomac beginning on sunday. and that, of course, is going to be another wrenching. moment for families knowing that some of the bodies still contained in that wrecka

in this circumstance, d.c. is a very active air environment, and yet i'm still trying to figure out, let me show the map to the folks at home. i'm trying to figure out how we ended up here, john. and i know i'm putting a lot on your plate, but can you at least sort of talk us through where they are and how this could have happened? >> sure. take a look at at the map. this is an aviation chart of reagan airport. on the left there of the river. it looks a little strange to the untrained eye, but the three crossing runways on the left of the river are reagan airport and its runways. now, if you see that ribbon, that kind of purplish ribbon on the right hand side of the river, that's route four. that's a helicopter route. it's reserved for helicopter routes. but the interesting thing to me is that you are restricted. the helicopters are restricted on route four to an altitude no higher than 200ft above mean sea level. and then when they get south of the wilson bridge, which crosses the river at the bottom part of t
