d.c. i was looking at the lobbying spending. i think a lot of it came out in the beginning of the year. now they have all sorts of other inquiries and other things to worry about. are you seeing that? how is it changing? >> i think that it is never a surprise to me that large companies have very effective lobbying shots. they are large. they have a lot of big issues that span across both the executive branch and the legislative branch. what i keep my eye on are the startups. because they don't have the resources to come to washington. they simply can't afford it. in meeting with very recently i invited the republican chairman of my subcommittee to come here and to listen to the small startups. and what was getting in their way and what they needed because again they don't have the resources to come to washington. it's not a surprise to me that the large companies have the lobby shops that they have. >> what are some of the things the startups want? >> they have a very specific list. first of all, one of them said to me, if i could double my workforce -- now, they have 20 employees, but

d.c. to look at some of the damage and flooding rain. >> we do have some damage from a huge tree that fell houses in the 5300 block of nebraska avenue. we are at an elevation in this part of northwest washington, so we're not seeing much flooding. but the soil is saturated everything is muddy. i want to show you did your tree that fell. we just shot this video a few minutes ago. if we had to go into the alley to get a better view of the depth and scope of this large tree that went down. that is the root ball. look at the size of it. it's about twice as tall as i am. all that completely tipped over. not only that but the stock of the tree that you are seeing right there, i cannot even wrap my arms around. luckily, most of that tree fell in between these two houses. unfortunately, for the homeowner, there's a pretty significant damage to the first story facing nebraska avenue. it has an attic smell, so that's all open to the air. there is damaged and debris. virginia is on the front yard. the unfortunate situation in northwest washington on nebraska avenue. surprisingly, all the surrounding

d.c. and metro area. let's look at live doppler 9000. the heaviest rain to the north and east of the district itself. as we take a little bit of the closer view here, we see that moving through st. college park and areas in princegeorges county with the heaviest rainfall at the moment, but none of these showers are producing any severe reporting. so the winds are below 58 miles per hour. any hail is smaller than penny size. haven't seen anything too big, but there's reports of pea-size hail. it's that isolated area of thunderstorms that's moving through and in fact, some of this thunderstorm activity spawned a tornado warning in northern parts of baltimore county. so it was a pretty intense little cluster of thunderstorms as it moves through, but this is it. we're not going to see anymore thunderstorm activity as we move through the overnight hours and beautiful weather moving in for the weekend. i'll have more details on that coming up in your seven-day forecast. eric, back to you. >> hail in mid october. don't see that all the time. >>

d.c. police are looking for the person who shot and killed a man in broad daylight. he was shot to death yesterday afternoon in the 1100 block of eighth street northeast near gallaudet university. >>> a serial groper in northern virginia is believed to have struck again. here is a sketch of the suspect. the latest incident involved a 25-year-old woman who says she was groped from behind while walking near the commerce street bus stop in the springfield area. this one happened about a month ago but police say it is the sixth case they are investigating. >>> one of d.c. mayor vincent gray's former aides has avoided jail time. howard brooks pled guilty earlier this year for his role in paying another candidate to bad mouth former mayor adrian fenty during the 2010 mayoral campaign. brooks was sentenced yesterday to two years probation alexander 200 hours of community service. he admitted he helped pay suleiman brown to stay in the race and verbally attack fenty. -- two years probation and 200 hours of community service. >>> this is not what we expected or hoped for. now
