it was surprisingly nice this morning and miami dade was getting the worst of it then. but here in key west, the center of the storm is expected to hit later this afternoon or this evening. it is marching 18 miles per hour. here in the marine athe boats are roped up together so none of them will break away by themselves, better to keep them in place. and the winds are definitely picking up, getting? palm tree fronds, bending and swaying in the wind. there was a recommended evacuation, suggestion by the county to all nonresidents yesterday. and we drove down here from miami on u.s. 1, the only way in or out because key west airport is closed. incidentally, 500 flights in and out of miami and fort lauderdale were cancelled today. but the evacuation line, steady stream of traffic, heading north, out of the keys, yesterday afternoon. so a lot of people did take the advice, key west itself, typically crowded on saturday. it was really minimal crowd last night. but the tropical storm is 65-mile-per-hour winds. if it gets up to 74 miles per hour, it's a cat-1 hurricane. so it

at the miami-dade airport, 555 flights have been canceled because of isaac. that's a huge number.nor has declared a state of emergency. the u.s. hurricane center says isaac will hit the gulf coast as a hurricane n that it's making its ways into the mouth of the gulf of mexico. new orleans is already under a hurricane warning. our chad myers predicting that this storm, which would be a hurricane, could reach category 3 strength. louisiana's governor is asking people living in the low-lying areas of the coast to voluntary evacuate and start that right now. voluntarily. so it's been nearly seven years since hurricane katrina destroyed much of the gulf coast and flooded new orleans. aaron neville is from the crescent city. he and his family evacuated to memphis before katrina hit. fellow new orleanian and cnn producer jessica dunn sat down with neville to talk about the months after the storm and how the city has since recovered. >> i was kind of bitter. i was, like, i don't know, i felt violated, you know? because i never went back to that house where i lived with my first wife, joel

, a lot of residents independently minded that did not take the recommendation of evacuating miami-dade county and they stuck it out and they are playing in the water. the center of tropical storm isaac right now should be arriving in the keys right around key west or slightly up the keys within the hour. several minutes around town there was this localized flooding but utility power crews were making sure it didn't go out as it did in miami-dade county. losing power for 35,000 residents. yesterday the recommendation was to evacuate, as we drove down in or out of key west at this point. there was steady stream of cars heading northbound. few cars headed in the city. key west was absolutely quiet. only locals and tourists had left actually. down in haiti definitive proof that the storm is expected to strengthen to a contemporary two hurricane. it has been deadly. 7-80 fatalities, three of them children and the risk remains for mudslides and klachs h collapsed buildings. everybody is taking it in stride. my miami county and broward county impacted by high winds and will continue throughou
