dagen: breaking news, market selling off around this world. i am dagen mcdowell. with me this morning and all morning long, mike murphy. keith mccullough, trading partners and our very own jo ling kent. we have the world covered for you right here and it starts with china once again triggering another selloff. china halted trading again today. it happened on monday. this time 30 minutes after the market opened. that happened in the united states. the market closed at 10:00 a.m. eastern time. the 7% selloff on the shanghai. within 7%. this selloff is well halted trading. it was scorned by china's attitude evaluate current date once again. seen as a desperate move to juice exports in an economy. how bad is the economy? nobody knows the answer. the ripple effect in other asian markets you can see the nikkei down more than 2%. hong kong off more than 3%. mild selling a few of south korea down more than 1%. european markets feeling pain as well. major markets they are lower by more than two, almost 3.5% in germany. that is their worst day since september. here in the u

i think dagen has a point. for the long term, yes, their savings, sure, 401(k) might have a little bit of impact but short term they're saving money. give you example, in 2015, from a jpmorgan study they did last year, people saved $360 for that year just from gas savings. will probably to down now that we're seeing the oil prices drop but what they did spend on wasn't what they thought would spend on, going out to retailers. what they ended up spending on was restaurant. now, speaking of consumer sentiment, seeing things coming out of chipolte, well, we have the e.coli situation, people where people are spending their money. once you have announcements like that, there is a company called -- neil: you're telling me they spent their money at chipolte? >> not just chipolte. a lot of those -- neil: saying, processed meats and cheeses would be a fine avenue. >> they're spending it on restaurant industry. neil: understood. >> so whether -- neil: much to account for that, but, you know, everyone's where is this bang

dagen: on the down 11.5%? not sending negative signal about the overall economy. >> it's a great point between the two-year and 10 year has flattened the fed has raised rates. we think that is a very troubled signal to the market. >> they were a better when people thought maybe not the fed would raise rates four times this year, even though the fed said that. most of us thought more like three. not the market is seen more like one. there is also the overhang was of them on worries about energy companies. i don't believe that it's a huge part of it. that is pretty contained. >> especially for the big banks. maria: it is still a negative story. >> who was holding onto the debt? if it's not the banks, you must eat the shadow banking system or somebody else. much of what we've seen in january is a liquidity crunch. we see u.s. assets sold to a lot of that is capital repatriated to the big oil exporters. we think that it's really been a key driver of the downdraft in the market. maria: glad you mentioned this. you

>> dagen: yes, yes and yes. this is what happened when you stop people from selling when they want to sell. this coming friday expires bans on selling for large investors in china over the summer. some of the selling is ahead of circuit breakers, not helping. i showed keith as the show was starting. keith has focused again and again on how the market overall are telling you that bad days are ahead. don't focus on the nasdaq. seven classes were up last year and 36 were down. only seven major asset classes, nasdaq 100 being the top performing up almost 8 and a half percent but 36 were in the toilet quite frankly. >> mike: whether you look at copper, oil, gold had a bad time last year because of the deflationary pressure. china may be deflationary over the market in 2016. >> keith: this is where i want to focus in the first quarter, how is the global recession in the u.s., we have one by the way, it's no longer a call, we are in an industrial recession, how does that find its way into the first quarter, corporate p

dagen: what about her backlash from iran? the last test there were iranian scientists at the status and they read all three tests. we need to find out in you can correct me if i'm wrong if there were iranians at this test and what does that do to our deal with iran? what about the exchange of nuclear weapons if you love between these two nations? michael rubin. >> it is one of the biggest loopholes of the nuclear deal and we were from part in the life and so we are only looking that it did inside iran. that is where the the inspectors will again put aside the fact the revolutionary guard refuses to love the investors into any military states. i don't know whether they are the current nuclear tests in north koreans have been in the test as well. iran cannot shura spurt in pyongyang and there's nothing we can do about it. it is a big gaping loophole in the irony is that had the same negotiators at the 1994 negotiations with north korea and the most recent with iran. >> what would you like to see the american response from the p

dagen: good morning, maria.ok expensive over history which would keep buyers on the sidelines. s&p sam sobol came out with a note yesterday looking at and arguing in one way that stocks look reasonably applies, but if you look at the trailing s&p right now, it is still expensive relative to where it has been in the 11th time since world war ii the s&p fell 20%. the s&p only down 13% from the recent high last year. a lot of these measures suggest stocks have more room to fall. maria: what is the price to earnings ratio you are looking at. fans cobalt as it is built to ask answers. 15, 16 times even before the big crash. what is it now? dagen: you are right on the money. 15.9 times the trailing valuation on the s&p 500 and compare that to 13.8 times for the 11th time since world war ii the stock market had gone into -- the s&p had gone into bear market territory. the market also looks expensive on a forward and trailing races if you look where it was during the 2011 correction low. again, those are the more recent

dagen mcdowell another tough day for market this is morning. chinese gdp numbers when you compare them to what we are seeing in the u.s. look pretty good, 6.9% was still not enough for market watchers who were expecting a better day, dagen. >> dagen: losing about a quarter of its value from the high last year, you look at small company stocks with a stronger dollar in the united states, shouldn't companies with less international exposure be the ones doing well? not if you look at 2000, it had lost more than 23% of value since last year. at least like the dow and the nasdaq and the s&p are showing a little bit more, if you will, strength compared to small company stocks. the biggest question in the united states is will you see collapse in crude oil prices. you see the collapse in gasoline prices. how does the american consumer react to that? are they enjoying the lower prices? is that giving them hope and optimism or are they watching their 401k plans, are they watching what's happening in the stock market and will that bring on a recession? i
