i decided to run because in south dakota you can be a citizen legislator, south dakota has legislature that's only in session for 40 days a year. so they're all citizens, they show up, it's wonderful as governor because as governor they are there for a month and a half and they leave again for the rest of oh the year but i decided i could, you know, my husband and i together with our three kids at the time that i could still run our businesses, be the general manager but i could go and contribute to our legislature and do that and do them all well so i ran for the legislature, was there about a week and i recognized the leadership controlled everything. and decided if i was going to be away from my family and if i was going to be away from our businesses then i was going to be as impactful as possible and i ran to be majority leader in the house and elect today that. while i served in the legislature -- [applause] >> while i served in the legislature i rewrote our property tax system in south dakota. and north dakota as well. just incredible storm system unfolding here. i want you to see these winds because this is significant. we're talking about over 45 miles per hour, cheyenne, wyoming. look at colorado, 52 miles per hour. you combine that with the snow and the visibilities are redeesed, some instances, below a mile. the winds will start to relax as the system starts to weaken and move eastward, but there's another unfolding problem just on its front doorstep. this is the rain. the warm part of the storm. we focus in on the appalachians. this is where we have a flood threat. if you're located in greenville, this is where we have potential for 1 to 2-inch per hour rain bands for the next few hours. localized flooding certainly a concern, and that flood threat shifts to the northeast, the major metropolitans, new york, philadelphia, and washington for the day tomorrow. just a marginal risk but something to keep in mind because that's the last thing we need as we all travel home from grandma and grandpa's

and we have a full-on ice storm across northern minnesota and into north dakota, parts of south dakota, this is really just snow, but again, being blinded and driven by this very strong powerful wind out of the north. we have roughly half a million people under blizzard warnings. ice storm warnings across the dakotas. so it is really focused in on the plains at the moment. and when we talk about reduced visibility, look at cheyenne, wyoming. about 3 quarters of a mile of visibility. winds are gusting 35 to 45 miles per hour. and so reducing visibility. winds won't relax ubntil wednesday evening. but we're still feeling its impacts as we head into the east coast for the next couple of days. in fact we have rainfall that is causing flash flood concerns over the appalachian mountains. flash flood watches are in place across western north carolina. so a couple extra inches on top of what has already fallen. and look late wednesday and thursday, we'll focus our attention across the i-95 corridor, new york city, boston, to the nation's capital, that is where we have a marginal risk of flash

more than a million people were under blizzard warnings in nebraska, south dakota, colorado and wyoming on monday. derek van dam has more on what to expect today. >> treacherous travel conditions as a christmas day blizzard set the stage for very difficult driving weather across the plains and parts of the midwest. look at this out of sioux city, iowa on christmas day, the plows were out in full force trying to deice the roadways and the interstates. that is because they were in the rain/snow mix line. you don't want to be driving on roadways covered with that type of frozen precipitation. nonetheless, the worst of the storm is over for sioux city and in fabts tct the blizzard condi are now well west of that part of iowa. you can see where the blizzard warnings continue through tuesday afternoon for northeastern sections of colorado. the winds are going to pick up, the snow will reduce visibilities for several hours at a time and it is not recommended to travel throughout that part of the country extending across nebraska and south dakota. this low pressure system is responsible for tha
