here's colonel daley in his little shed. how do we describe him? he's sort of a 1890's bohemian, a bit of a herm yit. most importantly, he was a friend of adolph sutro's. and sutro had a real estate shack on the northwest corner of the sunset. he let colonel daley squat in there essentially. he went out every morning, walked along the beach. whatever washed up he brought back to his shed and created quite a large little compound of old bottles, shoes, anything that washed up. a ship wreck. provided a bunch of lumber. he made a sleeping loft in his cabin. for a while he had a wife. she didn't wash up in the waves. but she did eventually wash out. she couldn't handle cooking in the sandunes every night, creating a fire. so she left him sometime in the late 18920 -- 1890's. but daley took one of those cars we were talking about and opened this little coffee saloon where he sold sandwiches, doughnuts, and little items to the picnicers who came out to the beach on the weekends. and soon other people, they kind of were charmed by this little old horse ca

daley. welcome back to "meet the press." >> thanks, david. >> so, it seems like the talks right now are on doing something temporary. a trillion dollars in spending cuts, raise the debt limit by that much, at least get us through the end of the year. is that something the president can accept? >> well, the president has been consistent in what he's called for. one, we obviously cannot let the credit of the united states government be in question. we've got to get past this debt ceiling vote on august 2nd. but as importantly, he's been committed to try to take serious steps to bring the deficit down, and that's what the engagement with speaker boehner, twice, that's what the fiscal commission founded, that is what the biden process was all about, not just to deal with the debt ceiling vote, but to do something about the deficit, which is a serious drag on our economy. that's what we were focused on. right now, we've got three things that must be done -- the debt ceiling must be extended, it s

we start with white house chief of staff bill daley. mr. daley, the republican speaker john boehner now seems to be thinking of a two-part plan here. first, congress would agree to cut spending over the next ten years by a trillion dollars and raise the debt limit enough to meet the country's financial obligations through the end of the year. then, a 12-person bipartisan committee would be formed to find $3 trillion more in savings and making significant cuts in medicare and social security and overhauling the tax code. congress would then take another vote to raise the debt limit before the 2012 elections. democrats and the white house have already said there will be no short-term increase. you said that yourself. but speaker boehner just now appeared on fox news sunday and said it had to be two stages. here's what he said. >> there is going to be a two- stage process. it's not physically possible to do all of this in one step. having said that... chris, i know the president's worried about his next election. my god, shouldn't we be worrie
