developments in dallas.is the status of the negotiations now? have negotiations resumed or what is happening through? >> reporter: we are told the negotiations are still ongoing. we are told the suspect in the vehicle is disavailabled, so we are just sitting here waiting out the conclusion of it. >> we heard from the dallas police department chief this morning in the news conference that this suspect, one of them has identified himself as james boulware, white male, 5'10", 200 pounds. police have not confirmed he is james boulware and know there could be up to four suspects total involved. we'll talk about boulware specifically. what have you learned about this man? >> reporter: james boulware was arrested back in 2013 for making threats against churches, his family. he was wanted here in dallas on a felony warrant. he was arrested in paris, texas, which is north of here, but he was arrested and he was also -- he had a possession of marijuana charge. so he has a history that would suggest someone that would

but that is the basis of the starting point for negotiations with the dallas police there in south dallas. we're here at dallas police headquarters. you see the police road block, the headquarters is a couple blocks down they have evacuated people keeping them out as they investigate a very active crime scene. they are finding shell casings, finding bags, at least one of the bags contains pipe bombs. we heard several small explosions as police blow up those bags to see if they can blow up the bombs themselves to see if they can detonate anything inside. so far all is quiet on that front. but police are still wondering what started all of this and how it's going to end. dara. >> charles, we've gotten word that this is possibly over a custody battle that this -- this man james boulware they say they believe they are speaking to, has a custody issue. and that this potentially could be over his 11-year-old son. do we have word on the whereabouts of the son or the former wife? do we know that they are safe and there has been no attack on them? >> we don't. police say that the man gave them a n

it was just beautifully handled by the dallas police. but when we look at the psychology of mass murderers, this guy is a little bit of a combination between revenge and a family anighnihilateannihilator. usually these kind of fathers that are very upset about losing custody, they have a beef with an ex-wife or partner, and they go and actually take out their revenge on the family. this guy, however, was angry with the police. and he said that they had branded him as a terrorist and i think he was determined to prove that he was -- that they were right. >> you bring up a very interesting point, and that is that we have been told that although he did have a history of family violence none towards his son. we're talking about a young teenage son in this case that by all accounts we're told that he was, you know, very loving to his son, et cetera. what does that tell you about his state of mind? that clearly, he had anger and violence issues was not towards his child? >> well you have to understand that that's why he felt so indignant and s

we're following the story from dallas.al interview with this suspected gunman's father today. what did he tell you? >> reporter: yeah, you know, first of all, we asked him if he recognized his son, if he recognized the van

he said james was the man behind the attack on the dallas police headquarters. three hours before the attack he was sitting right here with his dad. >> he told me he loved me and he was going back to west texas. i told him have a safe trip. >> that is not what happened. before the sun came up james was dead killed by a police sniper after threatening to blow police up for taking his child. he could have. his van was laden with explosives that police detonated. >> he left. he mowed my yard yesterday. he told me he was going to back ten days again. >> did you have any idea when he left? >> no. i knew he was angry with the police. he blamed them for taking his son. i tried to tell him the police didn't do it. they were doing their job to enforce the law. if you want to go back to that you have to go back to the liberal people who put the laws in place. they are just enforcing laws. >> james boulware had lost custody of his son to his mother. the boy's grandmother. the family fight preceded the custody battle. >> his mother and her half brother and james had a fight

heidi zhou castro for us in dallas.in corriveau has more on where this tropical depression is heading now. >> as we move through the rest of the day the big problem with bill is going to be the amount of flooding we get. we'll still see flooding down towards the coast of texas. a storm pushing up through dallas bringing a lot of rain with it. we don't see the winds but definitely a lot of rain. notice the cells pushing up the coast. we do have to be worried about that, because we could be seeing severe weather and the possibility of tornados through the day. by the time we get to tomorrow we think that threat will be over. the biggest threat after texas is going to be what is going to happen here in oklahoma. last month, oklahoma saw four times the amount of rain for the month of may that they normally would see, so they are already saturated and expect to get a lot of rain. as we go towards friday then the threat moves a little bit more toward the northeast. even st. louis may get it as we go towards friday night. heav

a little after midnight this man pulled up in front of dallas police headquarters near downtown dallasapon. police also telling us he left explosive devices in that parking lot rigged to go off when they were touched. an elaborate setup. two pipe bombs were detonated at dallas police headquarters by the bomb squad. no one hurt but bullet holes could be heard on police department windows. the suspect then rammed the police cruiser and led officers on a chase where a multi-hour standoff ensued in a fast food restaurant parking lot. s.w.a.t. officers fired shots into the suspect's armored van to disable it. and police say a sniper also hit the suspect through the windshield. prior to all of this the shooter called 911 and went on a rant about police being responsible for him losing control of his son. he self-identified to the police department however, we're not releasing his name right now. we're doing that to be responsible because the fbi says that although he self-identified, they have not been able to confirm his identity or if he is in fact dead. but they believed he was. the polic
