joe powell, executive director, association of persons affected by addiction, dallas, texas. dr. thomasina borkman, professor of sociology emerita, george mason university, fairfax, virginia. keith, let's start out by letting the audience know what is the need for treatment in terms of substance use and mental disorders in this country? a lot of people aren't aware of how prevalent these conditions are, but amazingly there are 45 million american adults who meet the criteria for a mental health problem. and 23 million who meet it for substance use, alcohol or drugs. and most of those who also smoke and the overlap between those groups is about 10 million people who struggle with both of those problems. so that means at any given time one in four people in this country could conceivably benefit from treatment for mental health or substance use disorder.

. >> eric: severe weather in dallas, texas. three twisters struck the city of dallas. go to meteorologist gary england monitoring the twisters in the storm. what is the latest? >> calmed down a bit. mere moments ago we had report that tornado hit school northeast of the dallas area, five to ten minutes ago. that report is step sketchy. dallas/forth worth, five large ones and other ones. they have calmed down a little bit in the dallas/forth worth mote replex, moved northeast. we had indication east report of cools hit. right now they are tornado from the northeast of texas. northeast of texas to northeast texas. it looks like it should calm down. but sometimes they do not. a line of storms to southern, oklahoma, east of dallas, all the way down. almost to san antonio. line of storm. we only have three tornado warnings at this time. earlier there were several tornado warnings, what appeared to be a huge tornado on the ground. you have can't tell the strength by looking at a tornado. you have to look at the damage later. >> eric: a lot of people in the area, dallas/forth

and, lynette, you know, there's some pretty dramatic pictures coming out of dallas, texas this morning. it's hard to believe that's what they're waking up to. >> i know. it's amazing. i saw that yesterday. it is absolutely amazing to see, very dangerous and devastating for them. the good news is this severe weather threat is now shifting off toward the east. texas will be out of it today, but then you have the bad news because we do have strong thunderstorms in louisiana and also pushing into mississippi, so that's going to be the name of the game as they go throughout the day. maybe a severe weather threat in portions of virginia and also the carolinas, but we will stay away from that severe weather threat. we do have a chance for maybe an isolated or stray shower to pop up as we go into the afternoon hours, a rumble of thunder out there as well. but right now we are under mainly cloudy skies. that will be the name of the game as we go throughout the day, a few peeks of some sunshine. with those clouds we are quite mild this morning. darlington coming in right around 50 degrees. we sh

chad, dallas -- texas isn't clear of the storms yet, are they? ea and the tv stations cover more than the two cities. so the dallas tv stations are still busy covering the storms that are here to the northwest of shreveport. those right there, those are the ones still rotating. they still have the potential to put down a tornado. but this would be ft. worth, this is dallas, and now this line, jessica, has moved to the east, almost like a bigphragm bo zamboni, sweeping all of the moisture out of the air, taking the potential for tornadoes with it. no more potential for significant tornadoes near the dfw area. let me show you what it looked like as it came up through dallas/ft. worth. we had two simal tayetaneously rotating cyclones, we call them mesocyclones. it moved up into kennon dale and up to arlington. this one here, that's the lancaster storm. as it moved up, and right to dallas, it put down tornadoes to the northeast of dallas. they were simultaneous. doing like battling tops as they were driving themselves through dallas and ft. worth. we
