damian trujillo has more on the vote and the timeline on how it's going to happen, damian. >> reporter: this is a very emotional decision not only for those involved. land is very valuable in silicon valley, and many feel the flea market and vendors fell victim. for months they have fought to prevent this from happening, describing the market as a key part of the fabric of san jose. >> we didn't get the whole cake or the whole pie, but we're at the table now. >> reporter: protests, even a hunger strike. the council voted to turn it into housing and retail. in a deal with the landowner, councilman david cohen and other leaders, the developer will open a fund to help vendors relocate. the city is adding another $2.5 million. the flea market can't close for at least three years and the new project will include a five-acre urban village where some of those same vendors will be able to move their shops once the new project is complete. >> my interest with keeping the market there, at least some version of the market that would be, allow us to pay homage to the cultural and economic center i

here's damian trujillo. >> she works from home now. it was almost a year ago since she got covid. >> it wasn't bad, really. even with underlying conditions, i felt as if i got off easy. >> reporter: there was a month of isolation as she continued to have a fever. then post-covid symptoms hit, starting with hair and hearing loss. >> i had already seen symptoms like cognitive fog. i couldn't remember what some of the words meant when i would do word puzzles or how to spell them. >> reporter: then dizziness. he is an infectious disease specialist at stanford. dr. benia runs a clinic that studies so-called long-haul covid patients, those with sometimes severe symptoms that last months after getting over the virus. >> we try to figure out best diagnosis for that percentage of population. >> reporter: they're also wondering if vaccines could help these long haulers. since they help fight off infections, they might help with post-covid symptoms, but more study is needed. the other big question, why do covid patients, even severe covid patient

let's bring in damian trujillo. that sheriff's department gave a detailed explanation about the video we're about to see. >> reporter: that's right, raj, and the sheriff put out this video just short of one week since the mass shooting. you don't see any of the victims in the shooting, but you do see the officers making contact as they're going into the building. it is quite chilling, as we mentioned, especially when you hear the interaction between the officers and sheriff's deputies. the video picks up right after the sheriff's sergeant and deputy team up with three san jose police officers to form the first entry team. the body cam video is from the sheriff's deputy. it is about four minutes long and redacted by the sheriff's office to hide the faces of the officers and shooter himself. while making entry, the team met a vta supervisor who was able to give him his id badge so the officers could open the secure doors of the building. they went up to the third floor of the building where they heard gunshots. the sh

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has a look at what many say the city needs to do now. >> reporter: theree been four homicides this past week alone. 20 for the year so far. the concern is how soon that number could go up if teens end up spending their summer on the streets. the latest homicide was early monday morning. police are still looking for a shooter who killed a man in the santee neighborhood. >> the days are definitely getting longer, which leads to more people going out and about. >> reporter: now that school is out and the lockdown is over, more kids will be hitting the streets and parks, and that's why san jose planning commissioner says the time to act is now. >> we have a chance to get in front of the summer crime wave with positive programs. why not do that, instead of doing what the city typically does, which is after the fact chasing the problem. >> reporter: the city needs to quickly invest $5 million, he says, from the general fund to create more after school programs and keep youth centers and libraries open for longer hours so kids have somewhere to go other than the
