nbc bay area's damian trujillo with details. damian? >> reporter: behind me is considered a high gun crime area by police. and so the d.a.'s office will pay some special attention to the neighborhood. now as you mentioned this comes just days after our reporting that the police are arresting a lot of felons with assault rifles, but the courts are releasing those felons within hours with no bail. >> our policies in santa clara county and counties across the state can't work if there's no one enforcing them. >> reporter: that's how board the supervisors president cindy chavez introduced the county's new gun violence unit. five members including a full-time prosecutor will be assigned to issue arrest warrants and target suspects in domestic violence cases involving guns. >> we're going to be able to make it safer. >> reporter: and santa clara county 6,000 felons each year are ordered not to have guns, but the police department and the d.a.'s office says other county offices need to do their part as well. the concern comes after our reporti

we're live in san jose, damian trujillo. >> thank you, damian. a double whammy for california, a dramatic drop in sierra snowpack and word that drought conditions are spreading across the state. new map shows that more than 23% of the state is now in a moderate drought. we're talking about the areas in beige, including contra costa and solano counties. this last week, less than 10% of the state was considered to be in a moderate drought. this comes as california has one of the biggest droughts in history. a 94% drop since february. >> hoping for a miracle march, but it doesn't look like it's being forecast. i hope it's not the beginning of a five-year drought or three-year drought. >> overall, 70% of the state is abnormally dry or in a moderate drought. >> is this a hole we can time to big ourselves out of? >> i think we can still make a dent in it. i don't think we need to panic about a drought as bad as the last time around, but it's certainly worth paying attention to, as we have been following this now for weeks and even longer. this dry tren

nbc bay area's damian trujillo joins us with the exclusive story. >> reporter: raj, this is the complex behind me. neighbors fear this may not be an isolated incident. >> and the dirt, had they started digging up the dirt, all smelled like gas. >> reporter: these gas lines were corroded, filled with holes. >> this was very scary. i barbecue right there. that big hole is where one of the big gas leaks was. >> reporter: his biggest concern is he never smelled the gas. he knew there was a leak because the water heater went out and the plumber accidentally punched a hole. pg&e's sensors alerted them to an underground leak. >> i didn't smell none that have gas. it was very scary, very dangerous. nobody knew. >> reporter: we showed pg&e these pictures. the utility says it looks like a developer or hoa issue. pg&e you do anyone who smells gas to call them for an an inspection. but this man says what happens when you can't smell the leak? he worries his neighbors may have the same issue and not know it. roger castillo says now he's worried. he lives across the street and has seen a lot of pg&e
