damian has a look at what happened at the site, but first, we get to jean elle. i understand he suffered very severe burns, very difficult moment right now. >> reporter: for everyone here, lots of hugs and tears here at san francisco general hospital. the fire department deals with the death of one and is waiting to hear about news of another firefighter that is here, still fighting for his life. earlier this afternoon, members of the fire department, the police department and city officials lined up to give lieutenant vincent perez a final salute. a very somber moment as the medical examiner took his body away. doctors say he died here at the hospital. he suffered severe burns, inhalation injuries and then went into cardiac arrest. fire chief said she started in the fire department with perez. it's a personal loss for the chief. the fire department's wrun onpresident says he was a popular, friendly man. >> i had the great fortune to work every day with vince perez for about ten years when i was learning to be a firefighter and i can say today that san francisco

damian trujillo is live with how they are giving their support during this trying time. it is certainly a brotherhood. >> reporter: it is. firefighters from across the area are gathering at this old fire station on third street south of at&t park. this is where they get their assignments. the men and women fill in across san francisco. all of san francisco firefighters can attend the services this afternoon. crowds packed st. mary's cathedral for a memorial in honor of tony and vincent. they were fighting a fire in a four-story home on berkeley way last thursday. they just left station 26. the past week has been extremely painful for the department and for firefighters across the country. now, crews from across the bay area will pay tribute to the san francisco fire department by filling in during their shifts today. >> coming in here to help. unfortunately, in this tragic circumstances, all of us, we are a family. to be able to help in any way we can, it's an honor. it really is. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still under investigation. an electrical malfunction
