and today in the bay's damian trujillo is live in san francisco with today's big events. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, actually, one of them is an oakland a's fan so irony there in san francisco here. opening arguments begin at 8:30 where the prosecution will present its case against barry bonds. jury selection did, in fact, take place yesterday. it took them less than a day for the jury to select a jury, or for both sides to select a jury. they hope to plant a seed in one of the jurors there's reasonable doubt that barry bonds lied to the jury. the burden lies on the prosecution since the judge threw out a lot of the evidence they wanted to use against bonds. bonds holds the all-time record for home runs hit. prosecutors say bonds was on steroids at the time and lied about it. the jurors will sit and watch and the jury that has only two people on it who appeared to be minority. >> it would be disrespectful to say we have so many men or tall people or red-haired people, that's not how we are looking at this. >> reporter: the big name on the docket today i

"today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live with the emotional story.reporter: oh, they are. they've been up all night, as you can imagine. they've been on the computers and on their phones doing the social media thing. relief is how you can describe the emotion here with the family of canon purdy. now, they finally made contact with her just before midnight. canon purdy taught english at a school near sendai, the epicenter of the earthquake. she just returned for graduation of her former student in japan, then the quake struck. for three days the family tried desperately to contact her using social media to help. after three long days, their prayers were answered just before midnight. >> sure, it was amazing. i was on the phone with ann curry, which i never thought would happen, first of all. and then i asked her, you know, ann curry, why you are calling me? and luckily she was able to pass the phone right over to my sister in the most devastated area of japan. such a welcome thing to hear. >> reporter: and the family here is thanking those who helped

damian trujillo is here with the difference that it could can make. damian? >> reporter: it will go up right here by the end of the year and it was a close call and the death of a little boy that helped speed up the project. on these tracks that nearly 80 miles per hour, a train ran over 2-year-old alexander back in 2005. >> the little boy was killed and it was truly tragic. >> reporter: the toddler wandered from his baby sitter and the train struck him. yet, knowing about the tragedy doesn't keep dozens of people from their daily illegal tricks across the track gls do you know how dangerous it is? >> yes. i worked in laos and daily i had to cross over here. >> there was a huge community on the east side of the track that has no accessibility to the west side other than crossing the tracks. >> reporter: now thanks to congressional earmarks, they will soon cross safely. there is going to be a new pedestrian bridge over the tracks. the idea came when a former councilman witnessed a mom on the tracks. >> i saw a young lady and her stroller and her baby on her hi

. >> let's bring in damian trujillo at the vigil. dami damian, i know at some point. this was a tight-knit community. is it still that way or ripped apart emotionally? >> well people have actually moved out. others have moved in, raj. it still remains kind of close knit. the community is beginning to gather right now behind me. vigil at 6:12 this evening. six months to the hour of the deadly blast. here is about 100 people, actually more than 100. a lot arriving. a firetruck here. red cross is here. this community, however, remains in pain. they still have many questions. some say it has been a double nightmare. it felt like an earthquake, maybe an airliner came crashing down after departing sfo. those were some of the thoughts after the survivors of the san bruno fire ball. >> when we looked over our shoulder, the fire ball was in our backyard. >> actually a couple blocks away. repair crews are on the scene, six months after the deadly blast. and for this man, it's been one nightmare after another. first it was the fire ball. >> the scary? >> what's scary? none, none

damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> let's turn your attention back to the stop story. the wicked, rare weather we experienced in the bay area today. a tornado touched down in santa rosa and then there was a tornado warning on the peninsula as well. plenty of anxious moments for people all around. we have reaction to the bizarre weather. >> reporter: this wasn't your typical storm today in belmont. >> i just saw some very gusty winds and i actually felt my house just shaking a little bit. i noticed the power went out for maybe five seconds or so but it came right back on. >> reporter: this storm has a twist, actually a twister. but fortunately one that never touched ground. witnesses reported seeing a funnel cloud traveling at estimated speeds of 40 miles an hour over belmont them national weather service issued a tornado warning for people of san mateo county. people we talked about said they were concerned about the strange rapid change in the weather. >> very loud. couldn't even see through it almost and some thunder happening. that's when we saw the tornado warning
