damian trujillo is live at sfo with the details for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. everything is now back to normal at sfo. everything unraveled a half hour before the plane landed in san francisco. that's when a scuffle broke out mid flight. police say a 28-year-old man with a yemeni passport ran to the cockpit and was banging on the door during the flight from chicago to san francisco. one of the flight attendants called for back up after trying to force the man to sit down. another attendant and two passengers tackled the man. they put him in plastic handcuffs until the plane landed safely. he was carrying a california id. he was taken to the county hospital with minor cuts, then arrested on federal charges of interfering with the flight crew. san francisco police sergeant michael rodriguez describes the scene for us. >> they were able to subdue the passenger, place him on the ground and use the flex handcuffs that the flight attendants have for these types of incidents. they were able to put them on behind his back

damian trujillo is live where a memorial for the heroes of flight 93 is. he has reaction from a mother of one of the passengers. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. flight 93, there were 44 people on board, including the four hijackers. i was here before the memorial opened in union city. i got the chills then and you can't help but get the chills now. it's so powerful. it honors a 20-year-old from japan. as you mentioned, mark bingeham, the 31-year-olds from san francisco. he remember his heroic efforts on the plane and the other passengers on board the 757 on 9/11. somewhere above ohio, the hijackers took over. several passengers made a pact to charge the hijackers. the plane went down in pennsylvania before they could reach their target. on the plane were many passengers from the bay area including mark bingham. his mother has been on this program several times over the last ten years. she was back last night speaking about the killing of osama bin laden. >> i am so pleased with the defeat of terrorism and the defeat of this particular terro

i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> this tragic murder-suicide is a reminder of just how dangerous it can be to leave a partner with a history of violence. nbc bay area's marianne favro is live at an agency in san jose that, marianne, helps women safely get out of volatile relationships. >> reporter: which is certainly tough to do, jessica. i'm here at next door solutions to domestic violence, which helps victims of domestic violence. now, earlier today i spoke with the sister of cindy caliguiran. she lives in the philippines, and i talked to her by phone. she said that her sister had confided to her that her husband had hit her in the past. that is why tonight at next door solutions the director of programs is gearing up for a surge of calls from bay area women worried they may be the next victim. experts say women leaving the relationship should ask some key questions to assess the potential danger their partner poses. >> do they have guns? do they have access to weapons? do they drink and use drugs? have they had a recent traumatic incident such as a loss of a job? those things

damian trujillo joins us from the main jail in downtown san jose. this is a county that sends dozens of inmates to state prisons every day. what happens to the prisoners that are soon going to be released? >> reporter: jail and county leaders are scrambling to understand the magnitude of the court's ruling but once those inmates are released, they will be coming here to a jail system many feel itself is overcrowded. they board the buses and head to prison every month but now santa clara county may have to take many of those inmates back. >> it's going to hit us with some impact somewhere along the line. >> reporter: the state has two years to reduce the prison population. inmates serving perhaps three years or less for nonviolent crimes. but that creates a big question. who is going to pay for housing the prisoners at the local level and how? >> we have not dealt with the budget implications and we have to see what the budget in california does. >> reporter: the head of the state prison system cannot guarantee that some won't be released on the stre
