nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live at city hall where he sat in on the gang prevention task force this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the group said it's not going to let san jose police fight this battle alone, and the chief of police made one thing clear. he is not going to request the help of the chp in these incidents here in san jose. the gang prevention task force meets on a weekly basis, but today's meeting centered around the violence of the last two weeks, which include eight homicides, one last night. the chief said he's going to throw all resources available at the problem, including increasing the overtime budget by $800,000. the sheriff said she stands by the chief and will lend support whenever needed. while one county supervisor urged the chief to seek the help of the chp, the chief said not at this time. chris mohr can retire right now and make more money doing something else avoiding all these problems, but he says not now. >> as somebody who ice been in the organization and city for a long period of time, 27 years, i feel a deep connection to i

damian trujillo is live at the emergency room of regional medical center where the injured firefighter is being treated. i understand damian, he suffered a heart attack? >> reporter: he did, jessica. there is a lot of optimism here, he did suffer that heart attack but his fellow firefighters jumped in and they brought him back to life. firefighters wasted no time putting out the flames at st. patrick's church. >> the rush of adrenalin, extremely scared, nervous. not sure what happened. >> reporter: amid all of the chaos frank ryan who was also a paramedic collapsed near his rig. >> we had emergency that one of our firefighters was down. >> he was exerting a lot of energy. >> frank lost his pulse and stopped breathing. chief mcdonald says that's when other firefighters went into rescue mode. >> our crews were on him, they started rescue efforts right away. they were able to resuscitate him. he was focusing on breathing and they were able to get his pulse back and a blood pressure back. >> a man with no signs of life was suddenly breathing again. >> our hearts go out to him and his famil

live in san jose, i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, damian. >>> a police search that locked down three oakland schools this afternoon. police tried to pull over a homicide suspect near the intersection just east of the oakland coliseum around 12:30 this afternoon. that's when the suspect took off and police set up a perimeter in the area. futures elementary school, roots international middle school, and coliseum prep academy were locked down for some 90 minutes while that search played out. in the end, they never found the suspect. >>> new details in palo alto after a three-hour search. they finally tracked him down. you see the video here. police chased the suspect into a neighborhood north of downtown palo alto. residents were sent reverse 911 messages alerting them to the threat and the lockdown. the man drove off after police spotted him talking on his cell phone and then he slammed into six other cars before running away on foot. he also attempted to carjack november driver to get away but he is in custody tonight. >>> a san mateo court mistake has now revealed t

i'm damian trujillo. >>> police announced they made an arrest in a recent homicide. michael paul howard is accused in the deadly stabbing at an east san jose story on tuesday. we learned howard was in court today in connection with another incident in june. in that case he brandished a weapon and interfering in a police officer. the victim was 22-year-old juan munoz. he was stabbed to death at safeway. it was equipped with surveillance cameras. investigators say gang activity has officially been ruled out an motive, but they aren't saying what the motive may have been. minute ago a spokesman for the family told us they had nerve heard of the suspect and feel munoz may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. the crime was the city's 31st homicide of the year. >>> new safety improvements are a sad reminder of a back-to-school tragedy on the peninsula. the city engineers says l.e.d. lights are on the crosswalk. this is the first day of school for the school district. last year a second grader was struck and killed by a teacher on the first day of school. city en
