damian trujillo is live at that home and damian, i understand alert neighbors helped in the arrest. >> reporter: yeah, jessica, neighbors heard the breaking glass and called police. burglaries are on the rise again, especially in the evergreen area, and citizen frustration is mounting. today officers from across the city rushed in to nab several men they believe just burglarize a home, then hit several cars trying to get away from officers. this is a home police believe the suspects targeted today when the smoke cleared, three men were in custody including one who had to be taken to the hospital after facing off with the police k-9s. >> they caught three suspects. the k-9 bit one of them. >> how wonderful. >> reporter: today's burglary is the most recent in what appears to be a growing trend. >> we've seen an increase in 2% in residential burglaries. obviously, that's a concern. >> reporter: in evergreen alone over the last three months, there have been 176 residential burglaries, and many of those burglaries are what cops call kick ins, where a suspect literally kicks in a door. offi

damian trujillo joins us from the scene of the shooting across the street from campus and damian, what happened and were classes cancelled? >> reporter: no, raj. one source tells me that the university police says this is the first time they had to shoot their gun at someone. the first time in their history since 1976. it happened right across the street from campus over there. all prelim narcotic undinary in they followed protocol. the evidence markers were still out five hours after the shooting. this is where san jose police say the two university police officers shot a man after he repeatedly refused orders to drop a large knife he was carrying. >> one officer from the university police department actually discharged his taser, but obviously, that had no effect. what happened after that is the second officer on scene used his firearm, obviously, in defense of his life and partner's life and shot in the direction of the suspect, striking the suspect. >> reporter: university police rarely, if ever have to draw guns. in fact, one source told me it was the first time a upd officer has
