damian trujillo joins us now live in san jose. damian, this controversy really began in earnest about a week ago. good morning. >> reporter: it did and it's picking up steam right now, sam. we spoke with a former san jose police officer who says he got a call over the weekend by the political adviser to san jose mayor chuck reed asking him to lie. former officer made his accusations in this signed document. he signed under the penalty of perjury and the allegations in this document are truly jaw dropping. he met with me just a few minutes ago here at the police union hall. he says the mayor's political adviser called him over the weekend and asked him to corroborate the claims made by former cadet revis, claiming a former president asked him to quit for the betterment of the union cause. he also says he proposed he sue the p.o.a. and get the president fired. he made these declarations, again, under the penalty of perjury. >> during my conversation, i became appalled and outraged that he would ask me to lie about him telling officer

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has been monitoring today's developments from our technical operations center, and damian, this is really good news as she is able to walk free. >> well, kris, truly a remarkable story coming out of the east coast and a major victory for everybody in this fight against ebola. as you mentioned, nina pham walked out of her care facility on the east coast to cheers and hugs today. pham contracted ebola while caring for a patient in texas who was infected. that patient has since died from the virus and more good news today, another nurse, amber vinson, is also making good progress with her infection. emory university hospital physicians say tests no longer detect the virus in her blood. she will remain at emory in the hospital's communicable disease unit for the foreseeable future, but today was about nina pham and her victory against ebola. >> i believe in the power of prayer, because i know so many people all over the world have been praying for me. i do not know how i can ever thank you, everyone enough for their prayers and expressions of concern, hope,

in a story you'll only see on nbc bay area, damian trujillo joins scientists as they looked for clues. >> reporter: the water district calls out a hazmat team to look into the death of the fish, but as it turns out, it seems the weather had a lot to do with what happened here and the recent storms may have contributed to the death of the fish. they swim downstream in dark waters made murky by last week's storm. but not far from them, this is what you'll find, dead fish on a dry river bed, carp, large-mouthed bass, and a native fish called sacramento suckers. >> it's very sad. i don't know what can we do? >> reporter: after nbc bay area called the valley water district, they brought out a team of experts to see what's causing the deaths. after studying the river bed, biologist jay able says he's seen this quite a bit and he blames the drought. >> the water table drops, the pools will shrink. >> reporter: able says last week's storm may have contributed to the death, that's when temporary pools formed on the guadalupe from street runoff water, which sometimes contains contaminates. >> t

nbc bay area's damian trujillo went to those at the heart of the matter to try to understand why san jose has far more openings than applicants. >> reporter: the san jose police department is currently hiring. the recruiting video shows the images of a rewarding career as a san jose police officer, but is the effort really working to recruit more cops? would you choose san jose? >> for a police department, i would not. >> reporter: 40% to 50% of the students at san jose state majoring in justice studies want to be cops, but very few are choosing the san jose police department. >> i would definitely consider santa clara county sheriff's department. i'm big on the sheriff's department in general. >> they are looking for jobs in other bay area law enforcement organizations. >> reporter: dr. james lee is chair of the department. he says students know about the pay and benefits in san jose and are already checking it off their list. >> something's going to have to change in the culture of san jose. something's going to have to change to make the job more attractive to the new recruits. >>

nbc area's damian trujillo is live in san jose where a neighborhood meeting is about to take place. and they want to know what shaping to the plan, damian. >> reporter: that's right, jessica. this meeting gets under way at 6:30 tonight. but some folks are already here. the residents here say they're looking for ways to band together to make sure vta sticks to the original plan. some people call it little portugal. for more than a decade, this area of alum rock has been planning for an underground bart station with a huge plaza at the ground level. >> we've struggled for years now in this area. and this would be a shot in the arm. >> reporter: but the staff at the valley transportation authority, which is running the bart to silicon valley extension is now proposing eliminating the alum rock stop altogether. >> do we have to apply for federal funds? the staff made a recommendation of different options of how we can apply for federal funds to make ourselves most competitive. >> reporter: this is the board chairman for vta and wants to keep the alum rock station. but he also has to list
