we're live at the base of the santa cruz mountains, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay". >> thank you very much, damian. as you can see, it's been a mess on the roadways this morning. another headache we're tracking right now is in pacifica, where a mud slide shutting down lanes of highway 1. let's check in with today in the bay's sharon katsuda. she's live with an update for us. sharon? >> well, good news. you can see behind me that traffic, northbound traffic, is finally moving. and they are alternating traffic. so northbound traffic can make it past the mud slide. they are heading up the southbound lanes right now, as you can see. the mud slide came down just before midnight. caltrans says this mud slide earlier was about 15 feet tall. it covered that entire right lane of northbound highway 1 near reyna delmar avenue in pacifica. you can see the by the size of it, it's taking hours and a lot of heavy equipment to clean it up. earlier drivers were told to take a detour all the way down to highway 92 in half moon bay. >> i just filled up with gas so i can make it. i wasn't going

we begin with damian trujillo. damian, schools are bracing for potential walkoffs like we saw during the election? >> reporter: that's right. the district is urging them to get involved in the process, talk about the inauguration, hold a rally maybe, but do it on campus. otherwise, there may be consequences. after the election of donald trump, hundreds of students took to the streets in san jose. in san francisco, even hayward. now schools are preparing for more potential walkouts for the inauguration. >> we have certainly heard some things. nothing concrete at that point. >> reporter: the school district alerted the school resource office at every high school to be vigilant in case of walkouts tomorrow. the district encourages students to express their thoughts on campus instead. >> we want to make sure that they are doing it at appropriate times. even give them a microphone or a p.a. or something. >> reporter: students on the east side are also being told to express themselves and stay on campus. >> well, we just

this is happening along highway 152 at lovers lane damian trujillo joins us there live. just a mess there as well, dami damian? >> yeah. the good thing is that the water levels have receded significantly. this ranch was three feet under water, the owner tells me he had to show up at 6:00 in the morning when he heard the news and rescue his horses. a lot of worried folks out here as the creek came rushing through their homes. >> rescue crews used a drone to inspect the flooded farmland in holster. they're looking for people or farm animals that may need rescuing. >> i was ankle deep in water on the bottom floor. >> aerial footage shows a swift rescue team moving people to dry land. 108 people were evacuated. almost half of them needed help getting out. >> they rescued a skoup el that was standing on the roof of their vehicles out of one of the residences down there. >> a few were taken to the residents center. >> we want to stay in our house, less than two minutes they came back in saying, the supervisor called and said it's mandatory you have to evacuate. >> the going is

damian trujillo is at the scene in san jose with the latest. >> the roots weren't deep enough to keep it from blocking mount hamilton road. put the tree down in pieces. it's going to be a while. they've been here for about four hours so far, and very little progress. crews had to shut off the electronic lines. the woman left her car and carried her grandchild to safety on her back. then waited inside a patrol car for a friend to pick her up. caltrans went to work, clearing this tree with chainsaws. crews cut up the tree, the other was focused on watching other trees, perhaps in danger of falling with the gusty wind. she wasn't expecting this. >> falling trees have been a big concern all day for crews across the bay area, and with days of gusty winds and rain still ahead, this likely isn't the last problem. we were sitting inside of our news van, the news van was moving, the wind, the gusts are so strong up here in the east foothills of san jose, they have 15 people working on this you can lip tuesday tree. looks like they're going to be here for a while. live in san jose, damian truji

we begin with damian trujillo, local immigrant rights groups say they're ready for a fight on immigration. >> they say they are, jessica, a lot of uncertainty tonight for tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants, including the students here on campus known as dreamers. while the program that shields those dreamers was not a target today, they feel this executive order does put a target on their families. >> they watched as the president went after immigration today, most were in disbelief. >> it was pretty difficult to be honest. i shed some tears. >> those stakes are high for erica, her parents are undocumented. she worries they may not return home from work one day. >> still being feared even more, really broke my heart. >> erica watched the president speech with siren, afterwards, the groups leader said their work load just increased dramatically. >> it doubled when he came on board, and now definitely our work has tripled. >> siren will reach out to attorneys to consider probono work to handle the increased work load brought on by the president. one thing they will not do is quit

. >> damian trujillo is live at the scene.cary situation for the people in this neighborhood seeing all of the police officers running around with their guns drawn. >> reporter: that was probably the biggest mistakes that the suspects made today, is that they were hanging around about seven blocks from police headquarters. so in no time they were surrounded. they were telling people to shelter in place, not to come out of their apartments because they knew where these suspects were inside. and they can't want them to get hurt. some streets remain closed because police are inside that apartment complex looking for evidence. they're looking specifically for a knife that they believe it was in the custody of one of the suspects. so they're looking for that. we do have video of the arrest of one of those suspects. again it is not clear yet if any of the three who were arrested today were involved in the bank robbery in scots valley yesterday. but this person was arrested, had to be tased for a moment. let me read you a quote, a st

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has been there all day long. they were going to open the southbound lane by 6:30. what's the update? >> reporter: we're still waiting, jessica. i'm looking at the southbound lanes now, the highway remains closed. good news, the old santa cruz highway has been reopened. that at least is another artery for folks who are desperate to get home from work at this point. but we're waiting. they said 6:30 for the southbound lane, about 8:30 for the northbound lanes. the manhunt continues up here in the santa cruz mountains. we are waiting to get an update from police as far as where that might be at this point. we do have video of the crime scene that happened just about after 11:30 this morning. officers were with heavy fire power scoured the area along highway 17 where the suspect apparently crashed his car. police released a surveillance picture of the suspect. they may the man robbed a bank of america in scotts valley and led police on a chase north on highway 17. there are reports that the suspect hit several cars d

damian trujillo. >>> speaking of the san jose pd, they'll begin holding community meetings in a couple weeks. the first one was scheduled for january 21 at the mexican heritage plaza. the hope is the community can hear from police and police hear from the community. get a dialogue going. establish better relationships. the meetings are planned for the long term. not just a temporary form. >> new fire codes will save lives. that's what the san francisco fire department said about the rules today. sharon is live in the mission district and what owners need to do to make sure renters are safe. >> reporter: people are starting to return from work. we are seeing apartment lights go on. you can see the apartment complex is really varied. some look like they need to remain their original state. the renters said they're glad it is opening up communication with the apartment owners. >> it's a good idea. being in this apartment for three years and know knowing where my fire extinguisher is. >> and wondering whether the fire extinguisher batteries have been changed. >> but now not so fast. the fi

damian trujillo is there and so many people flushed out. any progress there tonight? >> the fact that it's not raining helps a lot. i'm in the middle of lover's lane and it feels like in pacheco creek. over to my right, your left, trying to be evacuated. it seems to be since floodwaters have receded. it was a county wide emergency. ariel video shows residents on lover's lane being rescued. the office of emergency services had to call the swift water rescue team of the fire department. margie alvarez was one of those rescued. >> she got rescued by boat. she had to go with her two kids and stuff. >> crews used a drone looking for any people or farm animals that might be stuck in the flood. >> devastation. devastation. there is cars that were pushed into other cars and fences wiped out. so far all the animals look good. there are more cattle out there, but they are on high ground. >> pickup trucks abandoned with water marks reaching the door handles. the headquarters are also flooded and rain water pouring through the center of the facility. in all, 108 people were evacu

nbc's damian trujillo is showing you the special help homeowners are getting from police officers. damian. >> reporter: that's right. one of those families was a family of fallen san jose police officer michael casserman. almost 50 people had to be evacuated by boat including fallen police officer michael katherman. >> they had to be rescued. they went out there and took the family out of the house, saved them and then allowed them to get to safety. >> reporter: officer contactermcontact ekatherman was killed when a van was coming in the opposite direction. the driver made a left turn in front of the officer and now a scary few hours for that officer's family in hollister. >> you can't catch your breath. that's what's sad about this is they're starting to rebuild on every level and this happens. >> we're told the family is doing okay but is very private and declined our request for an interview. the police union is now raising funds to help them get back on their feet. today the cleanup continuing on lovers lane as the flood victims assess the damage. >> we're still proclaiming an e

damian trujillo has the latest from the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, the crime scene technicians were here until about a half hour. they opened the on ramp once again here about a half hour ago. 11 hours after the shooting here, a shooting that involved officers that were responding to report of an accident here on the on ramp. the response erupted into gunfire. which will not say what led -- whi chp will not say what led officers to fire. neither officer was injured. the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries. he was taken to a local hospital. this was a chp shooting, but the san jose police department is investigating the incident. officers here tell me that is routine since the shooting happened within city limits. the attorney's office is also investigating. this is the routine also in all officer-involved shootings. now for 11 hours, the ramp remained closed. this while investigators searched the suspect's car including the trunk of the car. we should mention we couldn't tell from the vantage point here, the car was behind us here at

and my colleague damian trujillo is out here as well wrapping this up at 5:00 and 6:00. we're in all the places that you are, twitter, instagram. chris sanchez, san benito in the bay. >> so glad no one was hurt. in sacramento county, a levee was breached there. this is north of thornton at sacramento and san joaquin county line. now, this is a breach meaning the water is flowing over the levee bank. it's not a break or a failure in the levee itself, but this is certainly flooding nearby areas and roads. >> people in downtown san ans elmo are out of their home. evacuations are still underway. this is the reason why. the corte madera creek continues to rise dangerously fast. the emergency alert sounded in downtown san ans elmo last night. city officials ordering everyone out west of town. the creek nearly took over the bridge. no word on when the evacuations will be lifted. >> now to a muddy mess in downtown martinez, the waters from the creek went over the bridge on main street and that flooded nearby roads. many stopping to look at the rushing water. some did what chp sa
