"she grabbed my pant leg and didn't want to let go," says wilson. the family was hoping to find a safer life in america. they were caught and separated near the border. johan commitme johani and their son were sent to l.a. but wilson and their 5-year-old daughter were separated. johani says she suffered, wondering where her daughter was and if she was being treated okay. after weeks of separation and a federal court order, the family was reunited this past weekend. now they're staying with a host family in the south bay, waiting for their case to be heard in san francisco federal court. as they wait, mom and dad wear these, ankle

nbc's damian trujillo has the exclusive interview. >> reporter: walter lopez spends most of his time near the phone these days, hoping someone will call to say he can see his wife and child again. walter's family was detained at the border while traveling north from guatemala. walter sayings the s the ordeal crushing for him, especially since he has no idea how his daughter is doing. what has him really worried is a phone call he received from the detention center this week, saying another child inappropriately touched her at the center twice. that is why we are blurring her face. walter says he's furious and that his daughter needs him now more than ever. but his own immigration status prevents him from traveling to arizona to pick him up. >> it's heartbreaking. it's hardelieve our government is doing this. >> reporter: he says there was no plan or strategy in place to suddenly house thousands of children. >> you put them all together in one place, of course t

in san jose, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, damien. >>> state of emergency declared. there is some progress in the fight against san diego's fast-moving alpine fire. but a state of emergency has been declared. this is what we know. several homes and businesses in the community of alpine have been destroyed. cal-fire tells us they do have some containment, right now 5%. the governor declared a state of emergency for that area. this is video from just a few moments ago. another hours burned. we have a handful of homes at this point that have caught fire just this afternoon. tough conditions going on right now. there you can see it is very hot. the flames very, very hot. 108 degrees combined with brisk winds, making it a miserable job for firefighters. the area we're talking about is near the charred 2003 cedar fire. you remember that blaze, it turned out to be the second largest fire in state history. first responders also immediately evacuated a mobile home today and set up an evacuation center. but the alpine fire is moving incredibly fast. it now covers more than 40
