nbc bay area's damian trujillo joins us at mt. umunhum. >> reporter: rangers had to close mt. umunhum road because it simply became too dangerous for drivers. the san jose fire department tells me they had to respond to a call of a driver who slid off the roadway. the car was making its way up to mt. umunhum in the snow when it started sliding. firefighters were able to stabilize the car enough so they could get the driver out safely. but two inches of snow fell on mt. umunhum. rangers tell me it fell at a lower elevation than in the past so they had to close the gate for the rest of the day. >> it was slippery due to the snow. we believe that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. the rangers did close the road due to the conditions of the roadways, very slippery and hazardous. >> reporter: the snow fell on hilltops and mountaintops all across the bay area today. it caught many people by surprise. no telling how long it will stay on the ground, as it begins to warm up a little. some people decided to hoof it, walking up mt. umunhum road for about a mile and a half to get to
