"today in the bay's" damian trujillo joins us live at milpitas city hall where that mandatory order there goes into effect today. good morning, damian. >> reporter: milpitas has become the first city in santa clara county to issue this order. now what does it all mean? it means it begins at 8:00 this morning but it means if you are in public anywhere in milpitas then you have to wear one of these face coverings. this is mandatory for employees and customers at essential businesses that includes places like grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations. city officials say face coverings do not replace the need for social distancing. one councilwoman posted on facebook the order was made to minimize the risk of community transmission in milpitas. the councilwoman says the city is partnering with key stakeholders to provide free face coverings to the community members. but the owners of essential businesses have to provide those face coverings to its employees. this order will remain in effect until the end of the health emergency. milpitas has declared a local emergency within the city limits

nbc bay area's damian trujillo spoke with a daughter who was worried about her father getting sick. >reporter: he just turned 90. antonio rodriguez worked hard all his life to support his family. >> my dad is an immigrant. he raised a beautiful family of three children with my mother. >> reporter: antonio is now in advanced stages of alzheimer's at the valley health center in santa clara. in early april a letter arrived saying a former resident tested positive for covid. days later another letter saying three staff members also had it. then over the weekend, the state released the raw numbers. a total of 63 people at valley house have coronavirus. >> it is very stressful. it is sad. it's nothing i've lived before. >> reporter: the new state numbers show 34 nursing homes in seven bay area counties have confirmed cases. family members say they want more transparency. how often are residents being tested? have any residents died from coronavirus? information that is still not available. >> but it is very alarming and upsetting to see this in the news and read reports in the newspaper and

nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live in san jose with the latest. damian, how is it looking out there now? >> reporter: marcus, it's not as busy as it was yesterday at the cathedral of faith. here we are at st. lucy's parish in campbell. they still have a lot of food boxes left. it looks like the cars that were lined up have come and gone with a couple of food boxes here. many people were lined up early, since before 8:00 a.m. this morning. and the giving so far continues, volunteers here are waiting for folks who drive up. this food giveaway is put on by catholic charters and they alternate parishes day to day. here they're expecting 400 people. they know more may have been on the way so they're standing by here. the need is great, people who lost their jobs or whose social security checks aren't enough to make ends meet. catholic charters called the entire region a disaster zone, so they will help anyone who drives up, together with second harvest food bank. catholic charters is helping thousands of people every week, new faces who never asked for

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has more from good samaritan hospital in san jose. >> reporter: they leavehe hospitals and clinics after a long shift dealing with the unknown, filled with uncertainty because of the pandemic. and now to make matters worse, nbc bay area has learned that their scrubs are becoming a stigma for these first responders. >> we have had some nurses that have said anecdotally that they've been in the grocery store or somewhere else after they've left work and while people are grateful, they don't want them anywhere around them in their scrubs because there's a fear that they're carrying covid-19. >> reporter: we heard from nurses at another hospital with the same worry. >> it definitely doesn't help them when it comes to all of the stress that ty're dealing with. but, you know, there's some education that still needs to go on. it's not the public's fault. it's nobody's fault when it comes to it. it's a novel coronavirus. >> reporter: so the chief nursing officer at good sam says his staff is now allowed to shower and change into civilian clothes at the hospital s th
