our damian trujillo has been looking for us. you got your hands on the video. i got to see a little bit of it. it's sad. >> reporter: it is sad, audrey. it's unknown exactly how it happened. this dear does happen what is a metal trap attached to one of his front hooves or its leg. it's been limping around the neighborhood for about two to three weeks now. it's upsetting a lot of the neighbors in our area. these traps are illegal. animal control tells us these traps are used mainly for raccoons, possums and smaller animals. they are illegal because they're inhumane in the state of california. they're afraid there may be more out there that have not come in contact with any of this kind of wildlife. they're afraid a dog might get stuck in one of them. the word is out to any ranchers who might have put them out, don't do it because they do injury animals like the little fawn on your screen. >> are the neighbors doing anything to help? >> well, they rallied together. one of the neighbors actually happens to be a deer rescuer. he's rescued about 12 in the last year

our damian trujillo was on the scene all day. he's going to have a full report at 5:30. >>> a judge has, again, denied bail for the man accused of killing a san francisco tech executive. defense attorneys for nima momeni made the request today. but he will remain in custody. charged with killing bob lee who was stabbed to death back in april. this morning, the judge was expected to set a trial date, but that's been rescheduled until october 25th. >>> well, for a second time, the san jose man accused of killing his mother with fentanyl has refused to enter the courtroom to hear the charges against him. bradley robert dexter stood in the hallway today as he was charged with murder, poisoning, and two counts of elder abuse. he was supposed to be arraigned last month but refused to leave his jail cell. dexter admitted to lacing his mother's drink with fentanyl. >>> there's no disputing it, the city of san jose has a homeless problem with literally thousands of people living on the streets and many dying as well. city leaders say they

our damian trujillo was the first reporter to break this story on air and online. he joins us from the neighborhood where he has been there all day. it's such a tragic and heartbreaking story. please tell us what happened here. >> reporter: yeah, really tragic. it's been a crime scene for the last seven and a half hours. homicide investigators were here earlier today. also an investigator with the d.a.'s office was also here making sure that everybody is on the same page when it comes to this investigation. police arrived to assist san jose firefighters because there was a welfare check at the day care center here in san jose. we're on fleetwood drive, and when officers arrived, they said there were three children in the swimming pool at the day care center. they were all transported to local hospitals. two of those children succumbed to their injuries. one was later listed as being in a nonlife threatening condition. good news for that family. a tragedy for the other two families who lost their children here in this drowning in almaden valley, this portion of sout

nbc bay area's damian trujillo shows us what's next. >> reporter: caltrans says they're not done yet. this is a two-year project. they're still going to add another layer of asphalt throughout the entire project. but they say that will not require the complete closure of highway 87. the trek along highway 87 in san jose is a lot smoother than it was a week ago. that's after caltrans crews spent the entire weekend repaving the southbound lanes. >> we were able to complete the work that was much needed nine hours ahead of schedule. >> reporter: caltrans says the highway had reached the end of its current life span. this is the second part of the project. crews repaved the northbound lanes in september, and commuters tell us they've noticed the difference. >> it's better than it was before. before it was a lot worse. there's still some areas that need to be improved on, but, you know, it's always for the better when they're improving things. >> reporter: xavier is a realtor and says his car was paying the price for the daily treks along the old bumpy lanes. >> pretty much brand-new. that

damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >>> x driverless cars are learning to be better drivers. this all comes from months of complaints in san francisco. senior alessio reporter has been covering economists. >> by now, everyone has likely seen some of those viral videos of what are supposed to be the smartest cars on the road and making some pretty stupid mistakes. but tonight, it's a self driving cars are now better equipped to recognize emergency vehicle so they don't get in the way. san francisco transportation agency has complained that the robo taxis to get confused and as a result, just stop in the middle of the road. at times blocking and even delaying first responders. today, internal software updates over the last few months have improved the way its fleet of self driving cars react to emergency vehicles. let's take a look at the video taken by a cruise car. it shows a driverless vehicle stopping for a police car even though that robo taxi had a green light. cruise says it's cars now lower their speed by about 70% once they even begin to hear a siren. the cars have als

nbc bay area's damian trujillo is in san francisco with the very latest for us. >> reporter: the neighborhoodnd st. peter and paul parish is in disbelief today, but they're relieved police were finally able to arrest the suspect. san francisco police and a bomb squad spent much of today searching the concord home of 42-year-old daniel garcia. investigators say garcia led them on a chase sunday that went from san francisco to martinez. during that chase, they claim he also threw two explosives at officers. it all started inside st. peter and paul parish, where police say garcia punched a parishioner during mass for refusing to give him money. police say garcia then took off on foot before ultimately jumping in a car and speeding away with officers in pursuit. that's when things went from bad to worse. >> the suspect threw out an explosive device at the officers. the officers described not only seeing the flames of the device that hit the ground but also the officers could feel when the bomb detonated, they could feel the blowback from that in their vehicles. >> reporter: the police union relea

our damian trujillo went to some local starbucks to see what's going on. he joins us now in san jose. damonia, how many of these starbucks locations are cutting off access to power outlets? and i'm assuming it's because we do sometimes see people sitting there all day like it's their office. >> reporter: we know of two in the san leandro area, but who's to say there aren't more across the bay area. we also heard -- or the sf gate reported that earlier this year, some of these starbucks locations in san francisco were moving all the furniture away, in essence closing away the lounge area. we do have video of l.a. doing this exact same thing. it's not just happening here in the bay area, but we heard about two at least in san leandro over by 14th avenue. and, sure enough, those electrical outlets were covered with a plastic covering. >> you ma i not know the answer to this, but do you know who's making this decision? is this a corporate decision, or is this just individual stores saying too many people are just sitting here all day long? >> reporter: yeah, i
