derek van damme standing by at the international weather center with more about it. >>> we have beenovering a lot of landslides and mudslides lately. unfortunately, we had our devastating landslide that took place in sri lanka earlier this week. then we had a landslide that took place in los angeles. this is a very drought stricken state in the u.s. and this rain has brought some much needed relief because the ground was so dry, so par. ed from this water that my amount of rainfall easily picked up debris and carried that much across much of that area, camarillo is where the landslide took place. this was in ventura county. it is an hour north of los angeles. this area had a significant wildfire in may of 2013. so that just added to this rainfall destabilizing the ground. there was record rainfall in the area. more than its monthly average for camarillo springs. there was one person trapped inside this house and he was rescued and continues to be safe. you can see the rainfall totals across that region, but fortunately the rain has moved on, although we could use more rain across the

let's get more from meteorologist derek van damme.und to be caught up in this somehow. >> we have a bit of good news, zain on this thanksgiving. we have good news and that is coming from the storm system on the east coast. it is starting to improve and slowly -- or quickly exiting along the major metropolitans on the east coast including new york, philadelphia, and washington, d.c. boston still has a few snow showers in the area. the heaviest of the snowfall in maine. but we have to be careful with the airport delays. you can see how many we contended with. 750. and really was newark airport that had the most cancellations. but even though i just checked the faa website a moment ago, there are not any major weather delays on thursday morning we could see an effect from the cancellations on wednesday. the green indicates low airport delays across many of the major airports on the east coast. but let's look at the winners or the losers, this is snowfall totals for dulles in washington, d.c., doesn't look that impressive but it set a dai

let's go to derek van damme in the weather center. those aerials tell the picture and now of course the snow is going to melt at some point. >> we have a big warmup in store for buffalo, new york. temperatures well above freezing and the possibility of rainfall. so a double whammy at the moment in terms of bad news. this is the forecast going into your saturday and sunday. the temperatures warming up all the way into monday, 14 degrees celsius, in the middle 50s. rain in the forecast and we could experience half an inch to an inch of rainfall on top of the snow totals that took place in that area. here's the precipitation in the future. on and off again rain showers saturday and sunday. but there is the low pressure system that will setting in by monday that could bring the chance of additional rainfall to that area. the temperatures are above average and we're talking about 224 centimeters. that's the highest snow total we saw from this lake effect snow event. that's 88 inches. and we have a lot of things to consider with that snowfa

let's go to meteorologist derek van damme. you have been talking about this coming. so certainly the people in buffalo can handle a lot. >> they will be switching from shovels to sandbags. she talked about it a second ago how they are paying attention to how drastic the temperatures warm up. on monday, 16 degrees and the temperatures drop off again on tuesday but it's we focus on these two particular days. the end of the weekend and start of the workweek where we have the possibility of rainfall in the region. you can see showers and thunderstorms moving through as a warm up commences. behind it, colder air settles in and brings in more snow for michigan. here's a look at the warnings in place across western new york, flood warnings in place for erie county and the surrounding counties as well. now switching gears the storm system responsible for the rainfall coming up is starting to brew across the gulf at the moment. it's pulling in warm, moist air and allowing for the possibility of severe weather. up to 16 million people impacted sunday and early monday morning w

. >> derek van damme is standing by in the international weather center.oring the sailors in the volvo ocean race. >> yeah, in the midst of a tropical cyclone, they didn't use the cyclone, did they? >> actually, they did. believe it or not. it appears so. obviously i'm not in direct contact with the sailors, but i've been tracking them on the gps on the volvo ocean's website. it's quite interesting. because they made it very close to the center of this particular tropical cyclone. remember, in this part of the world, this is madagascar, the continent of africa. air turns in a clock wise circulation around storm systems. basically what they did is actually traveled on the west side of this tropical cyclone, just feeding into the winds that were coming from a southerly direction and that kicked up the wind speed or the boat speed, between 30 and 45 kilometers per hour, so really using the storms powerful winds to their advantage. this is reunion island and mauritius and the concern has been the choppy seas that the cyclone has made across the southwest india

and i'm joined by eric van damme. rising temperatures are supposed to be a good thing.ooding in buffalo, how bad is the flooding going to be? >> it's the fact that they've had so much snow in a short period of time. and now the temperatures are going from freezing. and it's going to allow for the frozen precipitation being the snow, to melt and melt rather quickly. and a lot of times what happens with this amount of snow is it can actually clog some of the drains as some of the, let's call them little miniature icebergs float down the streets and clog the sewers. that could lead to localized urban flooding. obviously they have quite a mess to contend with going over the next 48 to 72 hours. then the temperatures take another drastic turn for, cold, colder, to 2 degrees at least, celsius. that is around 36 degrees fahrenheit. still above freezing, but temperatures overnight should continue to drop below freezing for the second part of next week. this is the broader scale of the storm that's going to move through the region. the low's going to be centered around michigan

meteorologist derek van damme joins us from the international weather center with more about it.erek? >> that's right, natalie. it occurred about 10:30 local time in papua new guinea. that was on thursday evening. this is the latest magnitude 6.6. that's down from what was originally a 6.9. the depth was 43.2 kilometers. again, this was offshore. and it was between papua new guinea and new britain. this is an area known as the ring of fire. kind of a hot spot for seismic activity really. no tsunami threat from this particular earthquake. and there have been no reports of injuries or damages. we want to keep you informed on what is happening. >>> this is a sight you don't normally see, at least this time of year. surfing in the mediterranean. not an area you would see waves. we have had a major storm or at least a low-pressure system really churn up the waves across parts of the italian coast. that's where that picture was actually taken. it's this low-pressure system in all of the moisture that is producing the flooding rains that we've had in france, earlier in the workweek, eve
