clearly a big concern for arwa damon. i don't know if she is able to hear me any longer or if we have any of our reporting staff, or clearance that they're okay. if we can get our producing staff in istanbul some clearance that arwa and her staff are all right. we want to make sure that is okay. here is the other issue. these are protesters -- many of them -- have spent days trying to get a message out. usually about the green space. usually about the innocuous. it has evolved into something different. the prime minister of this country has the said that he will have none of this. he is using an iron fist, at least with the rhetoric he has been employing in trying to quell what is happening in his streets. to say "this is not turkey. this is not the way we want our international image. i will not stand for this protest in our streets." not being met well. when you send in the riot police in this kind of demonstration with 10,000 people there is bound to be death and injuries. and there have been. upwards of 5,000 injuries

arwa damon is on the phone at the scene.r, the prime minister's office said they would not send police into gezi park but they are sending police to the edge and firing into the scene. what are you seeing? >> reporter: that's correct. we have move from where we were speaking to you last to across the street where right now i can see the tear gas filling the squ sky. this is one of the front lines that has developed around taksim square and gezi park itself. it's quite an interesting dynamic because there is this spirit of solidarity and people move around with these bottles that mel like peppermint. there's something else that's been interesting, too, a lot of people coming up to us and saying we're actually apolitical, this is the first time we've come out and had this strong of an opinion about our government. we don't normally get involved in politics. a lot of them are young professionals, i.t. professionals, engineers. they work by day and they come here by night. as we've been saying over and over, this isn't about the

we've been talking to nick paton walsh and arwa damon. they've seen them with their gas masks on and tear gas is firing. the pictures show a fairly quieter situation than was the case even half an hour ago. seems to be a series of cat and mouse games between the police and the protesters with the police coming in and the protesters shunting aside and they're moving back. nick, they're in taksim square. what does it feel like on the ground now? wrr as y >> reporter: as you mentioned, things quieting down. they're firing a substantial volley of tear gas in that direction. i think through the fog of my gas mask and the dark light, you can see the image of the fire some protesters moving down that particular road. i believe that's what they were aiming this massive volley of tear gas at. towards our live position here. i have to wear this gas mask. apologize for how hard it is to hear me. we're trying to see how many protesters are down that road. having seen so many standoffs here. christian christiana, this is a repeat cycle of violence on

are want damon and nick paton walsh are out there. our correspondents are still on the scene and they join us now, along with christiane amanpour. she recently interviewed the turkish prime minister. nick, explain your vantage point, where you are in relationship to where arwa is and what's happening right now. >> reporter: right behind me, anderson, just as you started talking, we've seen these fired towards police for much of the night. it seems to be the weapon of choice. i'll give you a moment to listen to this. it appears to be the weapon of choice of protesters. the situation down the street closest to me, we're talking about a square here in a park. arwa, when we saw her earlier, she was on the far side. i'm on the near side. down the left, police earlier on the evening made a substantial -- they pushed a lot of armored trucks, water cannons, pushing everybody back. in the last half hour, protesters seem to have crept back up that road. and that i think is where those fireworks were fired from. so it begs the question, what is

i want to go to cnn's arwa damon now, she is with me from istanbul. ar arwa, what's going on right now? >> reporter: well, we're on the street that is around a two-, three-minute walk from taxsim square and the park itself and just take a look at what is going on here. demonstrators have set it on fire. the riot police are up the street and they have been clashing with demonstrators down the various small alleyways, they've had rocks, bottles thrown at them. they are responding in kind. firing a fair amount of tear gas. we can hear the tear gas being fired. now, once more down the street. and you can just get a sense of the sheer and total chaos that this creates. the crowd here is probably around a few thousand at this point. whenever that tear gas is fired, it causes something of a mini stampede. and this is the people's reaction to the government's action. the government may have run out of patience and decided to go into the park, but the turkish population is -- the turkish population that opposes the prime minister is also equally run out of pat

arwa damon joins us now.explaining to us where you were and there was some tear gas involved in your reporting. >> reporter: yeah. we are on the asian side of istanbul and a few thousand people had gathered here. the image earlier was really quite incredible. they had gathered here trying to walk across the bridge to the european side which is where the square and the park are located. the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and again chased them down trying to push them as far back from the entrance to the area as they possibly could. tear gassing was pretty intense. we're also hearing people banging pots and pans. they do this in solidarity and we're also hearing people are trying to regroup once again and try once again to actually cross that bridge. istanbul has not been through something like this in recent history. we not only have the clashes happening, the tear gas happening in the area. this has spread to other parts of the city now as well. >> we are concerned because for the most part today

that's where we see arwa damon.e seeing right now. >> reporter: well, we're actually in the park itself and we're hearing people chance growing louder. they're saying everywhere is the resistance i believe getting the resistance. my turkogluish ish is a bit ru. bear in mind the government had promised that it would allow the demonstrators to remain. many of them coming up to us reminding us, wanting it put out that the government would said they would be allowed to stay as long as they were there. they claim that they have been all along. there is a spirit of determination. there is a spirit of solidarity here. people helping each other out when the tear gas gets too intense. we've also seen a stretcher moving up towards what can be called the front line. if you remember where we were just a short while earlier, it's actually where the turkish flag is. that is taksim square. that has very much become one of the many front lines that exists around this central istanbul location. people are moving back. they're chanti
