joining me now is cnn senior international correspondent arwa damon.ut this increase in deaths? >> reporter: well, ryan, those photographers that you're referring to, that long trail of people, that was taken in an area that's known as the death zone. it's the last push to get to the summit and it's called that for a very good reason, because there is so little oxygen there. when you breathe, you take in just a third of the oxygen you would take in at sea level. your body is literally deteriorating. what a lot of these climbers suffered from is the fact that they weren't able to get back down once they had actually summited. and we spoke earlier to a very experienced jordanian mountaineer. he's done the seven of seven, he's gone to both poles. here's what he had to say about this year's climbing experience. >> i think coming down is going to be a nightmare, because everyone -- when you come to a hill or a steppe, there is one way to go. if you want to go down, you have to wait. people have been waiting for hours. this is my biggest worry, 90% of people

arwa damon in live in kathmandu, nepal with more. what's happening?images are quite striking, especially when one takes into consideration that that's nor mousily long line of climbers is in what's called the death zone. it's called that for a reason. your body is degrading because of a lack of oxygen. every breath you take in this area only has about a third of oxygen you would have in a breath you take at sea level. it seems some climbers were well aware of the potential risks of being caught in this backlog for two to three hours. one is british climber robin hayes fisher who died. prior to that he posted in his instagram w a single route to the summit, delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal. i am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. unless of course everyone else plays the same waiting game. this climbing season only lasts for a few weeks. on average there are five to six people who lose their lives while they're trying to make it to the summit. but there have been a lot of criticisms about the number of climbers

arwa damon, cnn, katmandu.ace horse has been euthanized after getting injured as santa anita park in southern california, the park says the horse injured a leg. >>during his 6 race on saturday and was euthanized yesterday. this is the 26 horse to be euthanized at the park just since december. experts acknowledge that is an unusually high number of course debts for race season at the park. the deaths have inspired controversy and criticism from advocates for animals just last week the california horse racing board held what became a contentious meeting over the safety of the tracks for the horses in fact all of the deaths have sparked a reexamination of the sport in california. >>everybody's got to be point to the fact that the horse comes first if you do not put the safety of the horse first at this track you will not be welcome. we're looking to take these reforms looking to sell these reforms elsewhere. i think the national horse racing community understands there's a problem that needs to be addressed and we

cnn's arwa damon is in kathmandu, nepal. about why this year has been so much worse? >> reporter: erica, expert mountaineers are saying that this year was especially difficult for a number of factors that could be what contributed to all of these deaths. most of them from altitude sickness and most of them not as climbers were on their way up to the summit, but rather, as they were coming down. that dramatic photograph on social media, on instagram, that shows that long line of climbers. that was taken in what is known as the death zone. and there's a reason why it's called that. because when you're at that altitu altitude, every breath you take in only gives you a third of the oxygen that you would get when you're breathing in at sea level. a lot of these climbers succumbing to altitude sickness as they're descending. now, the backlog created perhaps for a number of different factors. some are criticizing the nepally government for giving out too many permits. they say that that is an unfounded allegation. others are saying
