arwa damon joins us live from the turkish border. these new alliances are striking. whael what's the situation on the ground today? >> pretty chaotic, john, to say the least. there are numerous reports that the syrian regime's forces are beginning to move north and take over key towns and border areas. as the turks themselves are saying, no matter what, they are going to continue to press forward. they have approached a number of strategic locations as well. although i have to say the town behind us that is a keyboarder town inside syria has been, relatively speaking, quieter today than it was in the past. there are a couple key things that are going on right now that relate to what unfolded in the last 24 hours. the fact that the kurds have turned to the regime has come as a surprise to some because they never completely severed the ties and they maintained the ties that were growing stronger to moscow. turkey also has ties to the russians, john. >> arwa damon for us on the border there. katherine lucie of the "wall street journal," paul kane of the wall street post

. >> let's go now to cnn senior international correspondent arwa damon. near the turkey/syria border. arwa, turkey and syria are each accusing the other of violating this so-called cease-fire. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: well, look. we're getting various reporting of some violations taking place, the accusations as you're mentioning there from both sides, but at this stage, none of these violations would seem severe enough to cause this cease-fire as the americans call it or pause as the turks refer to it to entirely collapse at this stage. what we are hearing, though, is increasing concern being voiced by various humanitarian organizations over the lack of access to areas where pitched battles were taking place and a growing concern potentially for the civilian populations that remain in these areas as well as the inability to reach the wounded. there are a couple of issues that are worth bringing up, though, at this stage. first of all, that statement you heard from president trump, the kurds are not happy with what took place. the kurds ins

no one was injured, but cnn national correspondent arwa damon is following the latest from the syrianlearning, arwa? >> reporter: well, the battle is certainly ongoing as turkey is pushing through, trying to undertake what really is a very large operation. now, if we look at the map that president ard want showed at the united nations, the scope of this operation doesn't just extend to one portion of turkey's border with northern syria. you can see the plumes of smoke from rounds that fell just a short while ago, but this operation is meant to push some 18 miles into syria and extend across hundreds of miles of territory that turkey shares with northern syria, namely with the area of parts of syria currently occupied by the kurdish fighting force, the ypg, which turkey views as being one in the same as the kurdish separatist group that it's been battling for decades, the pkk. where you see the smoke rises, that town in the distance and in front of it the turkish border gives you an idea how close these areas are. there are rounds that have been falling on the turkish side, onto the ci

our senior international correspondent arwa damon is "on the story". the protesters promising to keep the pressure up, come bullets or death. >> reporter: hi, george. and it's not just al arabiya offices that were attacked by these unknown masked men. there were attacks on a number of other local smaller iraqi news channels. the curfew has been lifted. at night, an entirely different story. we were out last night. the security forces are everywhere. they are blocking a lot of main roads. they set up a ring of security that demonstrators would want to reach to on a main road. that is forcing them to group in smaller numbers and in different areas. they are burning tires and they are absolutely enraged. the more the violence continues the more determined they say they are becoming -- a number of number of them said friends have been killed in these demonstrations. one young man told us, from his perspective, their demands are quite simple. they want an end to corruption. they want to have job opportunities. they want to have basic services improved. a lo

arwa damon explains, but that may not be enough. >> reporter: they remain under an internet blackoutay the government has been handling these demonstrations. the death toll is rising as is the number of those wounded up in the thousands. the protesters' demands are ones that many in this population have been making for years now, an end to corruption, improvement of basic services, and employment opportunities, especially for the youth. people here with a university degree struggle to find adequate jobs. demonstrators have been attempting to take to the streets, quite often being met with lethal force. now, to try to appease the demonstrators, the government is acknowledging their grievances saying they will be establishing an independent committee to address these do demands. parliament is also needing focusing on these issues, but at the same time there are key political parties who are asking for more. a radical cleric known for his anti-american perspective, he's calling on his par la men tair block to suspend par it isation demanding that the government resign and early election

cnn's arwa damon has more from the turkish/syrian border. >> reporter: the situation inside syria is growing even more chaotic and deadly as turkey presses forward with this operation. as we heard president erdogan say earlier, nothing is going to stop turkey from carrying out its goals. the situation, while it's unclear exactly who is in control of what at this stage, behind us is the syrian border town of ras al ain where battles seem to be sporadically erupting between turkey, the syrian arab force it allied itself with on the ground and the kurdish fighting force, the ypg. as this is pushing forward, there are also growing concerns about the safety for the civilian population as well as what turkey's long-term objectives may be. many quite surprised by some of the moves that have unfolded, moves by turkey that extend well beyond, it would seem, its initial goals. turkey and its arab allies captured a key part of the highway known as the m-4. what this has done is effectively cut off crucial kurdish cities and towns from one another and also cut off u.s. military bases from one an

arwa damon join us from the turkey/syria border. tell us what you're seeing here.e on the ground. the president has touted this as a major victory. a cease-fire. has the fire ceased? >> well, depends on what kind of fires you're talking about there. in terms of what we're hearing from this specific point, which is inside turkey overlooking in the distance the syrian town of ras al ain. this is one of the areas that is contested at this point and it is in that area where the kurds are saying that strike you were just referring to took place. it has been fairly quiet throughout the course of the day that we have been here. but we were talking to some residents who live in the turkish town on the turkish side of the border and they say that even after the cease-fire, they were still hearing the sounds of gunfire and explosions and even some this morning as well. despite that, though, turkey is saying that it is still abiding by this agreement and the president himself is denying any sort of major reports of violence that are stoaid to hav taken place this morning. thi
