arwa damon has all the details for us. what can you tell us? this is obviously a region you cover closely and have been to many, many times. >> it is. look, there's a couple of things to highlight. first of all, these are not just ordinary iraqi protesters. these are mostly members of what's known as the popular mobilization force. this is a force that came to existence after isis was maeching through iraq towards baghdad. but it's mostly made up of members who were, yes, part of a variety of very pouwerful shia militias, many of whom had close ties to iran. while they are currently part of the iraqi security forces, many will tell you that baghdad has very little control over them. so when the u.s. carried out these strikes against one of these groups, the iraqi government viewed it as being an assault on its own security forces. at least elements within the iraqi forces viewed it as being that. now these individuals who managed to a certain degree just march to the u.s. embassy in baghdad, then did attempt to set fire to the outside of it. th

lets get to arwa damon live in istanbul with the breaking details. arwa, you spent a lot of time on the ground in iraq. you look at these images as echoes of 40 years ago in tehran when the u.s. embassy was taken over there. tell us what you're seeing and what we're hearing from iraqi officials. >> reporter: that most certainly would presumably be the fear at this stage, but the situation has not quite come close to escalating to that just yet. the iraqi prime minister under his title as commander in chief put out a statement saying while the demonstrators had a right to mourn the victims of those u.s. strikes, they should most certainly not be engaging in t acts of violence against the u.s. embassy, saying that would be in defiance of iraqi law. at least there we have an attempt to try to calm down the situation, and these protesters, look, are not your ordinary protesters. they are by and large made up of members of what's known as the popular mobilization force. this is an umbrella force that was formed in response to isis and is largely made up o

so let's turn to cnn's arwa damon. she joins us live from madrid. good to see you, arwa.has been achieved so far at this summit, and what might the expectations be overall? >> reporter: well, there's still a lot of back-door negotiating that is going on although ministers are arriving at this stage. and even though this c.o.p. is not necessarily being billed as one of the so-called decision-making c.o.p.s, what happens here is critical, especially in light of the science that has emerged over the last year or so. now, to help us understand all of this, i'm joined by an individual with the global climate group 350.org. we're seeing this sort of disconnect, it would seem, between the science and what's happening on the ground and the speed of the negotiations that are happening behind closed doors at the government level. why is that the case, and what is actually at stake? >> first of all, the stakes are huge. what we get to see nowadays is the fact that the climate change is already happening, is already real and something that we're seeing unfold everywhere, all over the
