dan lothian, our cnn white house correspondent. joining us now in washington bob woodward and his number one "new york times" recent best seller was "the war within." what struck you about the president today, robert? >> this was a problem he thought was solved, that they really had set up all this apparatus and process, as everyone says, to connect the dots, and it turns out that, as he said, there are system failures and human failures. i remember one of the former cia directors used to say in dealing with something like this, the solutions are middle management having good middle managers, in this case, watch officers, who are there on christmas eve and christmas day, and then having the data to sift through. clearly, people were asleep. if you listen to the president's remarks at length, i think he used the word failure or failed about eight or nine times. i mean, that is -- he's giving a knee to the whole intelligence community and the system that is set up to keep something like this from happening. >> what do you make of him

dan, what's the white house doing about all of this?> they continue to monitor the situation, larry. the president earlier tonight put out a statement saying my thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake. we are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of haiti. the president found out about this earthquake shortly before 6:00 p.m. tonight, larry, and at that point you have to make sure the embassy personnel in haiti were safe, to begin preparations in the event they were needed for humanitarian assistance, and our u.n. southern command began to coordinate an assessment and any assistance. secretary hillary clinton said the u.s. is offering full assistance to haiti, that the u.s. will provide full military disaster relief, so haiti, a country that's been hit hard in the past by political unrest, other natural disasters, again, reelg aft reeling after this earthquake and the u.s. ready to help out. >> larry: dan, would you expect to see troops going in? >> it's hard to s

most of you know haines from his book and he says he is still promoting the book that he and dan washington post wrote on the 2008 campaign. i am sure we have copies in the front tonight. haines was a political reporter with the washington star when i first met him. he has written -- get this -- 16 books. some of which were co-authored with pierce. i was thinking it is a tribute to haines that so many of the books, not a majority but so many were written with other journalists. herb bloch was born in 1909 and he died in 2001. in between, he had a long and glorious career. he joined the washington post after serving in world war ii. his cartoons were so brilliantly thought out that he often defined the time. he is credited with inventing the expression mccarthyism in a 1950s cartoon. he won the pulitzer three times including 1964 after he published the defining cartoon on john kennedy's assassination, lincoln at the memorial weeping. many of her block's cartoons are etched in our memory. this generous book that haines has produced contains many of herlock's drawings and excellent explanatory
