dan curman has been monitoring the debate and he joins us now. it this is really crunch time for governor brown. >>dan: this is the debate we've been waiting for. there are 20 different bills but two key ones. a vote to put the governor's tax extensions on the ballot. if it goes on impasses is expected to save another $12 million. right now as you mentioned the debate is under way in the assembly of one of the 18 other bills. the budget bill needs a majority vote. the tax attention's needs a two- thirds vote which means they need a couple republicans in each house to join democrats for that to happen. >>pam: of course the tax extensions are the most controversial. >>dan: absolutely, if these tax attention's don't get on the ballot or past will be another 12 billion cuts the need to be made. >>pam: is are any indication, that the voters what action pass this? >>dan: there's a poll that indicates today, the majority of voters want this to be put on the ballot so voters can decide. to there's an indication that if it gets on the ballot voters would

you had to sit there. >> exactly. >> dan, thanks.e enough money for retirement? what you need to know before it's too late. >>> baby-boomers starting to think about retirement are finding that their 401(k) savings plans are falling short of what they need. according to a new study, the median household headed by someone 60 to 62, has a quarter of what they need. for tips to get on track and stay on track for your retirement, is mellody hobson, also the president of ariel investments. and, mellody, these numbers really are striking. 60% of households rely on their 401(k)s. yet, the money's not there. >> that's right. there's reasons for it especially unique to baby-boomers. first off, the baby-boomers are the first people to enroll in 401(k) plans. >> 1981. >> 1981. the typical baby-boomer in 1981, was 34 years old. they started later than the rest of us. most people, including baby-boomers, aren't saving enough. the typical american saves about 8% of their income in a 401(k) plan. you're saving about $4,000 a year. that's not enough

dan curman is an open, that's were plans are to send out hundreds of pink slips. >>dan: the school board will be meeting in an hour here at the oakland unified school district. it's all about the layoff notices march 15th as the deadline. they're planning on sending out 538 notices. most of these 538 our teachers, 231. 286 grade teachers, 41 english teachers, 45 social science teachers, 18 foreign language teachers. we're also talking about eight music teachers, 10 art teachers, 25 physical education teachers, a library and and nine counselors. they say this is the worst case scenario if the governor's budget does not pass. in oakland, they say there will be layoffs either way. >> i do want to give people false hope, there will be layoffs and it will be significant even if the proposal passes. they will not be nearly as bad and the impact on students will be nearly as great. if for able to get something approaching the government proposal to pass. >>dan: a couple of areas that are protected from the proposed layoffs include a bilingual education teachers andciald

[applause] >> dan, will you take a couple of questions? anybody have any questions for dan? >> we heard from seattle that they went down to sort of a regional type model. what's the status of that, some of us have regional or coastal, not snow back. when can we expect possible help for modeling of that? >> right now. it exists. that's what we used in this california assessment. for the scenarios they were all down scaled to twelve kilometers covering california and nevada. it's not totally adequate and i'm not saying this is a solved problem. the premium grape growers want to know what's going on in napa, valley but for a lot of water related problems i think we're okay.
