dan white cracked. he had been mentally ill all along with a severe depression although nobody had noticed he had seen a shrink or had been diagnosed and as if to underscore that, dan white sat there throughout the trial like something of a zombie, the shell of a man. he steered shade ahead and showed no expressions on his face and seemed to take notice of the testimony he might have been catatonic and yet he wasn't as his other defense lawyer told me he wasn't catatonic. i played chess with him in jail but you have to adopt some persona for a public ceremony like the trial, and that was dan white's persona. he sat their like the shell of a man and his lawyer who resembled him physically strode around the courtroom young and handsome and vigorous as if to say this is who this man was until this tragedy befell him. it worked. the defense called for psychiatrists and psychologists to support their theory that under pressure and in the heat of passion dan white has cracked and he was not able to execute th

dan kapanke has served in the wisconsin state senate since 2004. his opponent tonight, jennifer shilling, isht interestingly said that she actually voted for dan kapanke in the past but this time she decided to challenge him for his seat because of his actions under scott walker this year. jennifer shilling's challenge has been successful tonight. jennifer shilling, who has served in the wisconsin state assembly since 2000, will now take a seat in the wisconsin state senate. three republican senators have held on to their seats tonight, fending off recall efforts. one of them is republican senator robert cowles. he easily held on to his seat tonight. robert cowles's recall race against democratic challenger nancy nusbaum was the first one that was called tonight. it was called in senator cowles's favor. in this race senator cowles had been considered the safest of the six republicans facing recall tonight. the petition to recall him was the last one to be filed, and in a set of elections that was drenched in campaign cash the total spending on both

let's bring in dan gross, columnist and economic eder for yahoo! finance.d, thank you for coming in. >> good to be here, matt. >> obviously a lot of anxiety out there in the markets. some people probably feeling a little better today because we ended up over 400 points. historic gyrations, is this going to about repeat of 2008 and why or why not? >> i think it's natural people make reference to that because it's kind of resembling 2008. only a few years ago the entire market system melted down, but i think there are important differences. main thing is, 2008 was a private sector debacle. lehman brothers, $650 billion in debt and essentially no equity out in there. aig, fannie and freddie. nothing that could be done to save them other than the government coming in and backstopping certain debt. the fed coming in. this is almost entirely what we're seeing today. a public sector problem. and it's a public sector problem that is not in the u.s. despite this talk about the downgrades. the u.s. is not in danger of defaulting. our interest rates are ex-extraordina

in dan's piece. new york could get hit very, very hard. we have seen mayor bloomberg order evacuations. >> you take the center of the storm over new york city at any point. it hasn't happened since the 1800s, like 1821. here's the spaghetti models. we're going to show you the path and some others. let's get to new jersey. right along atlantic city. if you get down, most of the tracks are off to the side. reliable tracks go right over atlantic city. 5 to 10-foot storm surge. 20 to 25-foot waves. about 4 to 6 inches of rain. get up a little bit. back over through new york city. a lot of the paths are trending out toward the eastern end of long island. the reliable paths are m mtown. one is following the east river. back up and looking over toward boston, another city people are concerned about. here, a different situation entirely. boston is on the east side of most of the tracks. that means they'll get the worst part of what will be a tropical storm then, seeing about 60 to 70-mile-an-hour winds. >> in new york, right over the empire state

so, is this the first time, dan, that we're seeing this? >> it's certainly the first time that we're seeing armed rioters apparently shooting at the police. a very disturbing set of pictures and images that you can see there. the chief constable of the area, west midland's chris simms, said this was seemingly coordinated criminal behavior with no regard for people's lives, whether through setting a fire, shooting at armed officers or shooting at the police helicopter. he goes on to say this investigation is being treated as attempted murder and arson and only thankful that this is not a murder inquiry. imagine what would have happened if they had hit the police helicopter. this could have been really very serious, indeed. >> dan, i have to ask you, i mean this has been going on for weeks and it's only gotten worse. what is it going to take and i'm sure you've spoken to people on the streets there, what is it going to take for this to stop? >> well, i mean, at the moment, things have called down. this video was actually from the 9th of augus
