good evening, i'm dan ashley. governor promises to be responsible with the funds the state will be collecting. they gave him a big victory nearly 54% volunteered in favor of proposition 30 saving the state $6 billion in what would have been drastic budget cuts. democrats have a super majority in sacramento that would allow them to increase more taxes without going back to the voters. nannette miranda is in sacramento with the story. >> reporter: in a surprise, they handed the democratic party super majorities in both legislative houses. first simultaneous super majority since 1933. that means democrats have the two-thirds vote necessary not only to raise taxes but also override gubernatorial vetoes. the new numbers worry republicans which won't have much say in major policy. >> in a super majority, they have a lot of power. typically when you have too much power you can go awry. >> darrell steinberg says raising taxes is not in the >> identity i'm not going to suggested with our new powers is go out and seek and r

dan, you know this name very well. what's your sense of the price action of the stock because it's not just, of course, today. it was yesterday when technology rallied so strongly, apple was left out. it posted a bad month in october leading the nasdaq 100 to declines of 4% or so. what's going on here? >> yeah, well, to me i think there is a bit of rationality hitting the story here and i don't think it's a coincidence it made an all-time high on september 21st the day they introduced the iphone 5 down 18% to the ipad mini. we have a situation where between the iphone 5 and ipad mini, these are two of the first defensive products i believe the company has introduced in the last ten years. when you think about it, the iphone 5 went bigger, a 4-inch screen, where some competitors were already doing that. they shrunk the ipad from ten inches for the mini to about eight so here you have very evolutionary products. i think they're both very good products but i'm not certain that they're line worthy products, meaning lines a

cnn's dan loathian traveling with the president. joining us now. so dan, how is the president responding to criticism over this visit? >> reporter: well, you know, obviously the president pushing back on this criticism saying that, you know, if you were to wait around for this country to have a perfect democracy, you might end up waiting a long time. so to that end, the president will be arriving here and as you pointed out and will be meeting with two important figures in this country on this long road to democracy. first of all, the newly elected president and the nobel prize winning opposition leader who was free from house arrest to run for parliament. but this is a very delicate balance here. not only for the people in this country but also for the u.s. involvement in this process. because as i pointed out, there is a lot of concern that the presidential visit comes a little too early because there are still human rights concerns here. there is still violence and this country still has a long way to go. but as i pointed out, the president push

. >> i'm dan ashley. an armed robbery turned into a chase and then a shootout. alan wang is live at the scene with the latest on this breaking news tonight. alan? >> reporter: dan and carolyn, this is just one of the intersections shutdown in east san jose to night. we are told that police -- there was an armed robbery around 9:30 and police chased them to this spot, this area where they shot it out with them. we are told one of the officers was wounded, but we don't mow his condition at this time. across the street you can see them looking for evidence over there. the gun fight happened right in front of the best western right in front of highway 101. i spoke to the desk clerk and this is what she had to say. >> i told them, wow, that's gunshots. she was like, no, it couldn't have been. but then we heard the sirens and that's when we knew there were gunshots. >> and that guest had just checked in.

let's go to abc's dan harris, our colleague, who is in staten island tonight. dan?reporter: good evening to you from in front of what remains of a neighborhood restaurant here. the people in this area say they were hit by a sort of tsunami. in my ways, it was a secret tsunami, because the vast majority of the media attention has really focused on the jersey shore and lower manhattan. so, today, we decided to travel to staten island to see for ourselves this hidden pocket of utter devastation. we woke up this morning to alarming images out of staten island. people being plucked off their roovs two days after sandy, in scenes reminiscent of katrina. also reports of a desperate search for two children, swept away from their mom in the storm surge. and then word that the death toll had nearly doubled to 14. it was becoming clear that staten island, a sleepy enclave best known as the name sake for the famous staten island ferry, was a world away from the rest of this city which today was getting moving again. so, we hopped in the car outside of our office in manhattan, e
