it is where dan and mike debate the fate of a stock.tonight is, is the best yet to come for blackberry with the release of its new phone. mike gets the first shot. and remember, no filibustering, mike. keep to time. >> i don't think i need 45 seconds. maybe ten. this phone is not going to be a success. i was at a verizon store, i saw it. nobody's buying this thing. it is not a better product. look at the data. these guys lost about 1.5% of the market share in smartphones over the course of the last three months. but in fact, that represents 25% of what they had. they are absolutely going down. they're not making any money. i don't see this thing as a turn around story at all. >> dan? >> and i agree with all of that. i don't think the z-10 is going to do what it's supposed to do, bring back market share to the company that they lost to ios and to android. but to me, what's interesting of the stock here at 15, it's moving around like crazy. i think 33% short interest, sum of the parts. they have a third of their balance sheet in cash and

so to spend less, dan set it for $1.25. to make money dan needs yahoo!e a strike above the $1.25 he spends or above. but honing up $1.25, come on, we can do better than that. to spend less, dan sold the july 22 strike call for 60 cents. now between the $1.25 buying that lowest strike call and the 60 cents he collected by selling the highest call, dan's reduced the total cost of his trade to just 65 cents. now to make money, dan needs yahoo! to rise above the $25 strike price of more than that, 65 cents. but there is a trade-off. by selling that call, dan has kept his profits to the difference between the strike of the call that he bought and the strike of the call that he sold. hold on because paying 65 cents for a trade still ain't cheap enough for this guy, so to spend even less dan then sold the 18-strike put for 65 cents. now between the $1.25 he spent buying the call, the 60 cents he spent by selling the call and the 65 increments he collected by selling that other put, dan managed to put on the trade for free. now dan sees profits if yahoo! takes e

now, dan seeps profits if yahoo!a penny above the $20 strike price of the call that he bought. >> that's really inspired a lot of terrific people to sign on. >> it sure did, marissa meyer. but keep in mind, there is a trade-off. because he sold that put, dan is obligated to buy the stock for 18 bucks, even if it falls well below that level. it's all good, though, because since the time of the trade, yahoo! shares have added 12%, making this trade a winner. and now, the biggest fan of "options action." >> gives you all the information you want. >> just wants to know one more thing. what will dan do now? before we answer that, let's see how much money was made. had you bought yahoo! at the time of the trade, you would have made just over 10%. dan's trade required no premium and can be sold today for just over $95. so, technically, that is a return of a million percent or so. >> of course. >> should put a little smile on your face. a million dollar smile on your face. >> a smirk. >> smiles aside, dan what do you do now?

do you believe in this rally, dan? >> well, i personally don't believe it.t's happening, but the question you have to ask yourself, is what news is priced in the market here? as far as committing new capital, investors get excited to see new milestones in the market, new highs. we're close to new highs in the s&p 500. does that mean you have to get in? i would tell you that one of the biggest mistakes that retail investors make are doing things improperly at highs and lows. so i would say, be careful here. you're going to have an opportunity to buy stocks lower. to me, just because you see new highs does not mean you have to jump. >> when you talk about opportunity to buy at lower levels, when do you think that might come? what would be the catalyst for us to hit a brick wall and move back? >> the fed said they're going to keep the pedal on the metal. but if you look at the unemployment rate and the dow jones, the last time it was up here, unemployment was below 5%. so we're cheering 7.7%. doesn't make sense to me when you see equity valuations getting stret

i am actually dan flanagan. i am speaking for dan kida. we were noticed on this meeting fairly late and we had two conflicts. dan is the potential new member to the council and he has these words. he has been a certified arborist for the past 10 years. most of his career is spent working with the urban forest and pg&e. this involves working with diverse customer base who care deeply about their trees. the challenge is to ensure trees adjacent to power lines are kept safe distance while trying to satisfy their customers' expectations. he actually runs the crewses that have to inspect every single inch of pg&e wires every year, and he runs about four or five tree crews. so, he has probably more intimate knowledge of san francisco urban forest than many folks. i strongly recommend his candidacy for the urban forest council. he's been highly recommended by many people. >> okay, thank you. i noticed that he's not a resident of san francisco. >> i just called him at that. he lives at 1200 17th avenue number 304 in the inner sunset. >> okay, than

we're back with dan henninger and peggy noonan. dan, two weeks ago the president was attacking republicans for these supposedly horrible spending cuts and now he's reaching out to them. >> well, what i make of the change in strategy, the republicans called his bluff and let the sequester happen and the sky didn't fall. a couple of things did happen his approval rating dropped 12 points among women and the handling of the economy is a dead heat with the republicans. he doesn't have to run for reelection again, but a lot of democrats do and if you're a democrat who needs to get reelected you're getting very nervous and i think the democratic elites in washington have conveyed to the president this isn't working. you've got to do business with these people. >> paul: do you think it's cosmetic, rhetorical or do you think it's actually sincere? >> well, if it were deeply sincere, it would suggest a sea change with the president and i don't think that anyone is running around washington saying, my god, do you believe how he's changed? it

dan, i got a question. if you believe the broader markets are going down for all of these reasons, decelerating earnings, higher gas prices, et cetera, et cetera, and you believe that apple is weak here, why not put this trade on the cues instead of the s&p 500 where apple is a much bigger percentage, so you get more bang for your buck. if the markets go down, the nasdaq will probably go down as well and apple will have more of an impact. >> i like that. this is called "options action" here, people. i like the exposure, but it's a defined risk play. i like the structure here. but i do -- to your point, that's a great point to investors out there. pick on what's weak here. the nasdaq hasn't got anywhere near a new high -- >> one of the important reasons and i think this is probably why you're choosing to use a butterfly on the s&p, because it isn't the weakest spot. you're making a bearish play, but recognizing that's not what the market's been handing you. the fact that even though the at the money options
