i'm dan ashley. police are trying to unravel an incredible murder mystery. it started in richmond. the suspect killed after leading police on a high speed chase with his dead girlfriend in the passenger's seat. he was wouldn't for a death of a man in hercules and the disappearance of that man's son and two murders in vallejo yesterday afternoon. we have team coverage with amy hollyfield live in hercules. >> we now know what may have started all this violence. a fight over a woman inside this house in hercules. 46-year-old cindy tran is mother to three sons and one of her songs tells abc news that her mother recently broke up with the accused killer. they believe he beat 73-year-old man to death because he thought the man or his son was romantically involved with the girlfriend. the son is missing. police are worried that he may be dead. now, the girlfriend, cindy was found dead inside a car that he had been driving. her colleagues in vltz said that he didn't deserve her. >> they had a really rocky relationship. he loved cindy so much. he always knew there was something about him bu

he described what he saw to dan ashley and carolyn johnson. >> i got there about 15 minutes after it happened. >> these are your pictures? >> that's correct. the fire was absolutely intense. the gas line was actually burning right behind that home right there that you see burning. and what struck me besides the obvious heat was the sound that this thing was making. it was clear to me when i got $this was something to do with gas and not a plane. there was a lot of debris from an explosion that had happened. there were actually holes in the roofs of some of the houses from rocks that were falling. the firefighters were -- i had several of them come up and say they were just frustrated. there was nothing they could do. >> also reports that the explosion left a 15 foot crater there and also took out some of the water lines so when brian says there was nothing they could do for a time, they couldn't get any water on the fire. dozens of residents who ran for their lives last night are spending the morning in a makeshift evacuation shelter at the veterans memorial rec center in san bruno.

i'm dan ashley. the frustration among homeowners is pal pable in san bruno tonight. growing concern about the safety of pq and e's entire pipeline system. >> everybody wants them moved. it is too dangles. >> for 32 years they have lived near the gas transmission line that exploded last week and like most of their neighbors they had no idea that home was on top of a ticking time bomb. now, that they do know, they want to know more. >> do you have questions? >> nobody will answer them. >> reporter: many neighbors want to know exactly where the gasline runs and why the 30-inch pipe didn't have an automatic shutoff valve and where exactly in the state the 100 most dangerous lines are located. a list that so far pg and e has refused to make public. he is one of the legislators trying to get a list of the high risk pipelines with no success. he is proprosing ledge lakes to require them to install automatic shut off valves. it took nearly two hours to shut off the gas as flames raged through the neighborhood. >> they should have and must have a remote ability to turn a off.

ism' dan ashley. a dump truck driver loses brakes and careens out of control in oakland. a chain reaction accident chews up 13 cars. five people hurt, glad to tell you none of them seriously. it happened on mcarthur boulevard at grand avenue a block west of the grand lake theater late this afternoon. amy holyfield to take us through what happened. >> reporter: even police at the scene tell me they haven't seen an accident this big before and it as miracle and it is amazing that everybody walked away. a police sargeant told me that the driver of the dump truck was just released from the hospital. the truck plowed into a row of cars sitting at a red light. the driver of the dump truck said his brakes failed and he told us about how he felt when heard everybody survived the crash. >> i was happy and hopefully i can get ahold of the people that got hurt and say sorry, something, anything, you know. i didn't do it on purpose, you know. but i ruined their day big-time, you know, their cars are smashed. >> reporter: the driver did not want to give his last name. this happened ab
