i'm dan ashley. senior citizens and students in san jose are fighting the decimation of their programs today. >> reporter: today, san jose abouts youngest and oldest gathered to take on city hall. they are hoping by uniting vices they can save services. staffers are recommending cuts to the senior nutrition program from $1.2 million to $550,000. cutting at-risk youth programs in half from $4.3 million to $2.2 million and the healthy neighborhoods program which helps both groups could drop from $3.5 million to $400,000. some feel the drastic cuts are pitting the two groups against one another. since the healthy neighborhood's program dollars will have to be shared. 400 people packed city council chambers today during a special hearing to try to convince council members to change their mind. >> it isn't okay to treat seniors this way. is it okay to cut and hope that it works out? i urge you to reconsider such severe cuts to seniors. >> we don't have enough money do everything. we are glad to be able to

i'm dan ashley. overall the numbers are quite positive. april marking the fourth consecutive month of declining unemployment in the state. for the first time in a year and a half the jobless figure has fallen below 12%. keep this in mind. out of a workforce of more than 14 million people, california, added only 8900 jobs last month. but at least we added jobs. more tonight from abc 7 capital correspondent nannette miranda in sacramento. >> reporter: for more than a year and a half it didn't seem like, california, could get out of the 12% doldrums until finally a breakthrough. the unemployment rate for april dipped to 11.9%. it is a one tenth of a percent drop from march when the jobless rate stood at 12%. a year ago it was much worse, 12.4%. the state gained 8,900 jobs. anemic but not bad considering where it has been during the job recession. >> the job gains different from the story a year ago with job losses of about a half million jobs. >> reporter: as much as state leaders try to put a positive spin on numbers, more than two million p

good evening, i'm dan ashley, and we're going to start with leslie brinkely, live at the scene. >> dan, this was an urban fire that really took off. the residents describing it as going up like a match. an army of firefighters, over 110 in all, and dozens of trucks swarmed on this fire starting at 5:24 tonight. it began in a residential hotel on folsom and it quickly spread to two neighboring buildings, including six apartment units. thick plumes of black smoke rose from the rooftop as the flames shot into the sky, and here's what the firefighters had to say. >> the building has 48 residents, and so we had a lot of people displaced. pretty stubborn fire fight and it's extended into three exposure buildings. >> the flames came out the back window and went out the door and the alarms didn't come on yet. there was nothing but black smoke, and two seconds after i opened the door, the alarm came on, and the sprinklers never went off. >> we understand that everyone got out of the fire, but there was concern that a firefighter was missing, and it turned out not to be the case. they sounded an

i'm dan ashley. campbell plils jus police justa missing little girl. they say she is the victim of abuse. lisa amin gulezian is live in campbell with developments that have come forth just in the past half hour or so. lisa? >> reporter: campbell police found three-year-old deja in a parking lot in south san jose with her mother. according to police the little girl is okay but is right now with child protective services on on her way to the hospital while her mother, jane marin is in custody. police believe marin and her ex-boyfriend george rodriguez are responsible for hurting deja. campbell police got a tip yesterday afternoon that the little girl was being "severely abused" inside this house near the campbell los gatos border. when police arrived there was no sign of the girl, her mother or rodriguez who actually lives in the house. police confirm that they had been called to rodriguez' house in the past but they would not say why but they did say it was not for child abuse or related crimes jks back her. become here live, investigators say a tip led

i'm dan ashley. it did not take long. documents from osama bin laden compound are already giving up vital piece of information. one that al qaeda was plotting to strike america this coming september on tenth anniversary of 9/11. the target? trains. here's about pierre thomas. >>reporter: authorities in all 50 states warned that al qaeda was planning to attack train lines potentially killing hundreds on the upcoming anniversary of 9/11. bulletin obtained by abc news states as of february 2010 al qaeda was alledgedly contemplating conducting an operation against trains in unspecified location in the united states on the tenth anniversary of september 11, 2001. one operational died was looking into trying to tip a train by tampering with the rails so that the train would fall off the track in either valley or bridge. >> can't guard hundreds of mile office track. if they can get to one location not well guarded and put explosives on it or do something to cause the train to derail these a lot easier than going after an aircraf
