they could become endangered again quickly. >> reporter: dan ashley, abc7 news. >> veterinarians are guarded about the falcons' prognosis but they are eating on their own. this morning, federal ban of drop-side baby cribs take effect. they have a side rail that moves up and down. the rail can detach and babies have become trapped. a federal rule bans the manufacturering, sale or resale of the drop-side baby cribs. they are blamed for 32 deaths and suspected in 14 others. the new rule also mandates more rigorous safety tests for all cribs. >>> san francisco drivers may soon lose over a dozen precious parking spots in several high-density neighborhoods. under a pilot program, the city would rent them to the non-profit city car share company for $150 a month. the parking spots are in russian hill, the mission, and south of market. the goal is to reduce private car ownership and attract new drivers to the car sharing concept. >> it would be for residents themselves. they're asking for it because they don't want to have to buy cars. >> it can take you 20, 30 minutes to find a parking spot

i'm dan ashley. get ready to start paying sales tax on much more of what you buy online. the governor signed a bill that makes online sites like amazon charge sales taxes for purchases in california. the story from nannette miranda in sacramento. >> reporter: most retailers with a store front in california like the avid reader are happen by governor brown signed the bill that forces out-of-state internet sites to start collecting sales tax from residents. they thought it was unfair customers could essentially get a discount for buying items tax free online while stores have to charge a sales tax. >> why should the brick and mortar person have to operate at a disadvantage when they do the hiring and support the local economy and amazon doesn't. >> the the law previously only required retailers with a physical presence in california to collect a sales tax. etailers like overstock.com and amazon.com got away with not collecting the money because they don't have a store front in the state. but the etailers contract out with 25,000 small businesses based in california known as

i'm dan ashley. troops will begin coming home from afghanistan this summer, and the pullout will accelerate from there. not soon enough for some, and too quickly for others. >> the war in afghanistan has cost the united states dearly. and tonight president obama announced the beginning of the end. >> i also made it clear our commitment would not be open ended and we would begin to draw down our forces this july. tonight i can tell you we are fulfilling that commitment. >> right now there are 99,000 american troops in afghanistan including the 30,000 surge troops that deployed starting in 2009. the president said tonight that 5,000 troops will leave this summer. another 5,000 will leave the end of this year. 23,000 more will be home by the end of the summer of 2012. but is that soon enough for a war weary american public, and a frustrated congress. >> the american people want a significant and sizable reduction in troops. that means at least above the surge level of 2009 which was 30,000. so i would s

i'm dan ashley. one thing was made clear today. these two men were well liked and well respected a profoundly moving service that brought the brotherhood of firefighters together in a way that only the saw lem naughty of an event like this really can. thomas roman is here with a look at what was tomas a very moving day. >> dan, the memorial was an opportunity for family friends and co-workers to describe what the two men meant to them and the city of san francisco. they also spoke of the vacuum their deaths have left in many lives. it was a solemn memorial and grand celebration of two san francisco firefighters' lives here at saint mary's cathedral. >> there are no words that can describe the pain and hurt that we feel. there are no words that can even begin to do justice to the sacrifice that has been made. >> that sacrifice was made by vincent perez and valereo. they died as a result of a fire they were fighting last week. it was standing room only at saint mary's. the cathedral was filled with hundreds of men and women in unifor

i'm dan ashley. president obama announces tonight that he will withdraw american troops from afghanistan. the president says he is acting from a position of strength because the united states has made substantial gains against al-qaeda and the taliban. he is calling therefore for 10,000 troops to come home in two phases starting this summer. and another 23,000 by next summer. >> starting next month we will be able to remove 10,000 of our troops from afghanistan by the end of this year. and we will bring home a total of 33,000 troops by next summer, fully recovering the surge i announced at westpoint. after this initial reduction our troops will continue coming home at a steady pace as afghan security forces move in to the lead. our mission will change from combat to support. by 2014, this process of transition will be complete and the afghan people will be responsible for their own security. >> the war has certainly taken its toll. there are 6160 crosses on the hillside memorial off highway 24 in laf

. >> good evening i'm dan ashley. a 5 minute stop turned into a nightmare for a bay area mother this evening. she left the baby and the keys in the car. the wrong moment for her. a golden opportunity for a thief. fortunately the baby was found safe. search continues however for the baa car thief. lisa is live in salinas with the details. >>reporter: we are here at valley memorial hospital. this is also where the little baby is being treated after a 3 and a half hour long search for he her. the one month old was still in her car seat while police found her. car she was rideing in was dumped south west of the city of salinas at monterey salinas highway and tore drive 50 miles south of where the car was stolen from. a tip led chp officers to the car and to the baby. ones responsible for stealing the car got away. >> well they will do different type of try an locate any kind of dna. any other kind of evidence that might be there. in the vehicle. they will attempt to talk to individuals in the area if there are anywhere th

i'm dan ashley. family of missing nursing student is about to launch the first full scale search in the morning. michelle lee last seen may 27t 27th. detectives say evidence in the case points to murder. lillian is live in hayward with more on the story. lillian. >> lee family is launching a 3 day search tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and they are counting on the public's help. lee brother cousin and other relatives made announcement at the hayward police department early this evening. they say they are working with the class foundation providing experts to help train the volunteers expected to help with the search. it has been 3 weeks since nursing student michelle lee disappeared. she was last seen just before taking her break at kaiser hospital in hayward. hayward police believe she was murdered based on the evidence they have collected so far but the family says it has not given up hope that she still might be found alive. >> we wake up and think what are we going to do today to help michelle come home an

. >> good evening i'm dan ashley. bay area bound amtrak train collides with big rig at reno. 2 people dead. several others injured. one passenger says he saw fire ball. more than 200 passengers were on board the train headed from chicago to emeryville. the collision occurred at a crossing on highway 95 near fernly nevada 70 miles east of reno. leslie is leif from the amtrak station in emeryville where the train was headed now with the very latest. >> that's right. this was supposed to be the final destination. the amtrak station for amtrak train no. 5. california sever but then the unexpected happen suddenly this morning. flames engulf several passenger cars on the amtrak train after a big rig truck struck the westbound california train around 11:30 friday morning at this crossing 60 miles east of reno. some passengers were trapped inside. smoke from the burning car soared into the blue desert sk sky. 2 04 passengers and 14 crew members were on board en route from chicago to emeryville. the crash happened without warn

good evening i'm dan ashley. >> we begin our coverage with abc 7 lillian kim on this day of tragedy for the san francisco fire department. >> it has been a sad day for san francisco fire department. one firefighters is in the icu while the other was pro pronounced dead after arriving at san francisco general. american flag covers the body of lieutenant perez as wheeled out of san francisco general hospital. doctors did what they could to save the 48-year-old firefighters but in the end perez heart gave out. he's a good friend of perez and grew up in san francisco. >> he loved his job. he laivd for that. he was a good man. very good. very good friend. to all of us. >>reporter: perez was one of 3 firefighters sent to the hospital from house fire in san francisco diamond heights. one has been treated and released. other 53-year-old anthony is fighting for his life. he's in critical condition suffering from severe burns. mark is his brother. >> he brought in hot air and smoke and they don't know how long. he was in the smoke so he has a lot of stuff coming out of his body. >>reporter: as fo
