here is dan ashley. >> dan: lake tahoe may be rich h in natural beauty but the economy is in trouble. >> schools have closed. the population has declined. it's really a tragic situation. >> dan: mike bradford loans an inn here. they were the economic engines that drove the tahoe area. in fact when they were first built the idea was to make visitors forget the lake was here. >> everything was inside the casino building. it was undesirable to have anyone go anywhere else because that was lost revenue. >> but now, indian casinos have lured away most of the gambling customers. >> they are not coming here. so we're left with a product that is no longer viable. >> he is leading the coalition to remake the area focusing it on natural beauty and turning into outdoor recreation center. >> to make more appropriate use of lake that is economically viable. >> they have put together what they call a short vision plan, turning this corridor into upscale walkable town with easy access to the lake. most of the money for the makeover would come from private investment. idea goes hand in hand with a go

dan ashley explains. >> dan: when they take a walk near lake tahoe she does not expect to see any bears should be hibernating but this year things are out of whack. >> we went some that went to bed and woke up. >> there are 200 volunteers help bears share the basin peacefully. they should be tucked in their dens. it follows a summer which was the best ever for the bears. that is best in very few confrontations with people. last year was heavy snow which created a lot of natural food. >> the water started to flow and green occurred, someone flipped a switch and the bears and it was quietest summer we've had on record. >> during a bad summer, the bears get 150 calls a day from people reporting bears looking for food near homes and businesses. last summer, they only got 10-15 calls a day. >> i thought something happened to all of them. we went out looking for the bears, we thought, are they okay? indeed, they were. their coats were gorgeous. >> but if we don't get more snow soon, this summer could be rough for bears. >> they will be knocking on our doors and trying to get into our refriger

dan ashley. an outrageous, sickening crime in the middle of the day. it happened in east oakland near 66th avenue. ama dates is live at oakland police headquarters with this story. ama? >> reporter: dan, he was murdered while caring for his one-year-old son. i am told he was living in east oakland for the past six to 12 months. that's where he was living with his baby and his baby's mother. they were at police headquarters tonight and i spoke to smith's mother. >> if you know me, you know i am going to get to the bottom of this. you will be brought to justice. >> reporter: a mother's words to her son's killer. 24-year-old tyrell smith was shot and killed while pushing his one-year-old son kyrell in his toy car. >> my daddy is gone now. >> reporter: smith's mother is rushed to his east oakland home near 66th when she heard he had been shot. a neighbor told her what happened. >> somebody he knew spoke. she heard shots and ran out there and then saw the baby. >> reporter: morris didn't get to see her son's body. the coroner had taken it. >> i got up here and seen the baby. they were holding the baby. i know it is my baby. >> reporter: but it hasn't hit her yet. joy he was lovable -- >>

dan ashley. let's get to spencer christian for a quick look be on how long the rain is going to last. spencer? >> dan, we do have pockets of mood rat to heavy rainfall and you can see on live doppler 7 hd. close from on san francisco where right now we have pockets of moderate and heavy rain over along great highway to 32nd avenue and then going north up on highway 101 over on bay street. and out into the northeastern part of the city and out towards the golden gate. we had some widespread area of moderate and h heavy rainfall in the east bay earlier. much of that is pushing out into the sacramento valley right now. and earlier we had pretty substantial rain down in the san jose area between san jose and los gatos. rainfall totals looking i'm pressive at the moment. over 4/10-inch from this system at cupertino. look up in the north bay very little from zero at st. helena to 1/100-inch at santa rosa and not much happening in the north bay. concord picked up 2/10-inch. suddenly picked up sizzle. we will show you what tex peck tomorrow morning. >> and it brought more than a little drizzle. >> that is tr
