european countries shoulder the burden of the worsening refugee crisis, my "nightline" coanchor dan harrishere is with some of his most opt his stick travelers. young, social media savvy, and with only desperation back home they welcome the uncertainty of the future. tonight, their story. >> reporter: it's the middle of the night and we're with a group of several hundred scared refugees. moving en masse quickly, quietly, through farmland. it is pitch black. trying to sneak across is border into hungary. this is the largest mass migration in the history of europe since world war ii. this is the front lines of it. as they move through the night, there are stops and starts. everybody's very nervous. there are rumors flying about thieves in the bushes or cops up ahead. everybody's very jumpy. they have good reason to be anxious. they've seen all the videos of hungarian police clashing with refugees. they've also seen this now-infamous clip of the hungarian camera woman tripping a refugee carrying his child in his arms. we have come to the hungarian border following 11 young syrian refugees who

abc's dan harris is in greece where thousands have set up camp. good morning, dan. >> hey, robin, good morning. i'm standing in a port on a beautiful greek island, a place that would normally be filled with happy high-end tourists but it's today crammed with thousands of desperate refugees. these people have been stuck here for days. there's been mounting tension, even violence but now the logjam appears to be breaking. overnight we witnessed throngs of refugees clamoring to board a boat. finally heading for the european mainland after days of being stranded here. this is a combustible mix of hope and chaos. so many people lined up clamoring to get on board this boat. an estimated 15,000 to 25,000 refugees have been marooned on this island. they pay smugglers to bring them on rickety dangerous boats from turkey and then hope to move on to the greek mainland up through macedonia, serbia, hungary and austria and finally to germany. many traveling even further all the way to france and great britain. but local officials here on this island of 85,000 p
