our white house correspondent dan lothian is in martha's vineyard where the first family is on vacation. dan, why did president obama decide to take this step this week? he canceled joint military exercises between the u.s. and the egyptian military. >> reporter: that's right. he did, brianna. and the main reason is because of the escalating violence on the ground in egypt which you have just been talking about. the president condemning that violence, condemning the actions of the interim military government there and the security forces, but also there's been this sort of level of frustration within the obama administration at the slow pace of the transition from this military interim government to a democratically elected civilian government. the obama administration, at least officials within the administration, had been discussing this as an option. in fact, back in june at the time that the administration decided to delay the delivery of those f-16s, it was brought up as an option to pull out of these biannual exercises known as bright star, but it was only on wednesday after the p

dan lothian is there. dan, any word from the white house yet? >> no official word from the white house and reached out to a number of officials there, senior administration officials when that news broke. we do expect that there will be some kind of reaction, but nothing at this point. what we do know is that clearly this is not the resolve that the white house had wanted. for some time now white house officials have been talking to the russians trying to force them to have snowden brought back here to the united states and face those charges for leaking classified information. white house officials, u.s. officials have not considered him a human rights activist. they have not thought that he was a dissident. they simply feel that he needed to answer to those charges, as you pointed out, that the attorney general here had revealed some months ago. it's unclear what the reaction will be from the white house, but, again, this is certainly going to have some kind of an impact on the relationship that for some time now has been quite fragile between

dan lothian has been in the vineyard with the president all week. ems kind of nuts. i have to say. how has this week been for you reporting with the president? >> well, it's always a challenge. we are digging around to try to figure out what the president was eating, perhaps he had a tasty gee zert. at one point he came out of a restaurant with a bag full of fried food. this was the same day we were reporting on the first lady taking part in this hip hop video promoting healthy eating. so it was her counter program to the president's unhealthy eating habits at times. but it's a challenge because really it's time for the president to unwind, ride his bike. and those aren't the stories that necessarily get you on the air, it's one of the things when we got here, the big controversy in the local talking about how people were concerned that a main road that ran in front of the rental property where the president was had to be closed. at least a portion of it. and that was the big controversy we were all reporting about. and i talked to the local you news

our white house correspondent dan lothian joins me now. the president to say? >> reporter: well, you know, carol, the president has been talking lately about shaking things up in the higher education system so, today we'll see a step in that direction. one of the things that the president is expected to highlight and has been getting a lot of attention this morning is this proposal to rate colleges and universities, put together a scorecard, if you will. this would be something designed by the department of education that would look at things such as what is a school doing to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds or how are they improving their performance. we're told by the secretary of education, arne duncan, this is not something that would require congressional approval, but they would come up with a scale based on hearings, public hearings, listening to students, to teachers, to administrators, to state officials before they come up with that scorecard. in addition to that, those universities that do perform well, the president wa

white house correspondent dan lothian following the latest in washington. here, dan. >> hello, brianna. you know, i was talking to a senior administration official who told me that the president continues to get briefed on the latest developments today. he had some briefings yesterday, as well. this follows a high level meeting by some of the president's national security team, including his national security advisor susan rice, secretary of state john kerry, also chuck hagel from the defense department talking about the latest information on this threat and what kind of actions officials need to take. this all follows the president early last week directing his national security team to take these extraordinaire actions. the steps that as you pointed out have now resulted in some 19 diplomatic posts closed. now for a week. and all of this officials telling it us done really just out of an abundance of caution. >> now, it's interesting, dan, because there's a lot of the folks who normally are not people who are in the corner of president obama who are reacti

let's get straight to dan lothian at the white house for the latest. it's happening now, dan.is morning? >> this is clearly not what the white house had hoped for. there was pressure by u.s. officials on the russians to have snowden expel back to this country in order to face the charges against him for the release of those classified documents. no official word yet from the white house have reached out to a couple of administration officials. so, still waiting to hear whether this was part of some negotiationated deal or whether or not the russians, indeed, are going against what the u.s. wants. there's still a lot of outstanding questions here, particularly how will this impact the already fragile relationship between the united states and russia. and will the president still be attending the g-20 summit in st. petersburg in this upcoming september. white house spokesman jay carney has always said the president's intention to attend the submmmi and have a change of venue of the g-20. we'll wait to find out if, in fact, the president knew about this move and how it will impac
