. >> and in connecticut, governor dan malloy has closed roads to everyone except emergency vehicles. same situation in massachusetts and rhode island. let's go to nbc's jay grey. he's live in boston. good morning, jay. >> reporter: the official count at logan airport, 21.4 inches. that's going to increase. 400,000 without power in this state. those numbersi could climb as well. the winter storm pounding the northeast since friday continued to strengthen overnight into a fierce and relentless blizzard, making matters worse, hurricane-force winds, gusts up to 75 miles an hour creating blinding conditions. the projected snowfall totals are staggering. before it's over, up to three feet of snow is expected in parts of new england, including boston. the storm has literally stopped most of new england nits tracks. more than 1800 cancellations at new york area airports, 4700 flights canceled nationwide. the governor of massachusetts ordered all cars off the roadways starting at 4:00. a move that made sense after this 19-car pileup in maine scattered cars across the road and into ditches. >>

. >>> the governor of connecticut as we just mention, dan malloy, told drivers to get off the road. only emergency vehicles are allowed. nbc's ron al within the very latest from hartford. >>> good evening, craig. every hour the conditions here have deteriorated. state officials are anticipating the snowfall here at about 5 inches an hour into the night. and the winds picking up. we were talking to the governor earlier today, he said that was one of his biggest concerns, gusting winds, 30, 40 miles per hour, sustain for a period of time. along with the snow. that's a blizzard. and that's what could cause the real problems here. they expect about 30% of the state to be knocked out of power. and that could go on for several days, because some of the power lines will be buried, it will take time to undig them and for the workers to even get out there. they have people from michigan, north carolina, south carolina, here to help. people have been heeding the warnings, they've been off the roads and staying hunkered down at home. again, the worst of it is now starting to roll in here in co

in neighboring connecticut, that state's governor, dan malloy has also issued a ban on all non-emergency motor vehicle traffic. and that ban took effect earlier this evening. and rhode island's governor lincoln chafee has taken similar measures, ordering cars off the roads instate as well. the storm has been blamed for this 19-car pileup and is causing travel problems in the air as well. at this point more than 4,000 flights in and out of the northeast have been canceled. new york city's airports remain officially open at this hour, but most flight activity has ended for the night. already just a few hours into this storm, more than 10,000 electric customers in the northeast have been left without power. and tonight the national guard reports that more than a thousand national guardsmen have been activated in connecticut, massachusetts, and in new york as this region prepares for the worst. joining us now is nbc news meteorologist bill karins. bill, what is the latest at this hour? >> well, melissa we are watching this storm maturing, if we want to call it that. it is growing into intens

you can see where connecticut governor dan malloy issued a state of emergency in connecticut and signedr prohibiting any traffic on the roadways because he felt conditions would deteriorate overnight to a point it would be dangerous to have too much traffic on the roads. you can see the plow there, that one vehicle probably not supposed to be out. those plows have been out all afternoon and evening at stanford. they started working earlier putting down salt, but there's still a slick layer out there. earlier about 5:00 i took a measurement of just about how deep the snow was. it was about 5 inches then. now let's go ahead and look to see how far it is. we're about 7 inches, 7 1/4 inches now, so certainly significant from a few hours ago. they're saying it could be up to 2 feet overnight. so really we're just getting started. with a blizzard it's not just snow you have to worry about. it's wind gusts, gusts up to 60 miles per hour, hurricane strength gusts potentially could knock down power lines, affect some of the electrical equipment in the area. so that's why elected officials and po

governor dan malloy saying that snow accumulated during that storm is now causing people's roofs to collapseave already reported some sort of damage. meanwhile, there is an also a possibility of even more snow moving into the area sometime tomorrow night. and meteorologist maria molina is live in the fox weather center. it i just say more snow tomorrow, maria? >> more snow tomorrow night, basically into thursday morning and also looking at a possibility for another nor'easter as we head into this weekend. so, we're looking at two storms that could be bringing in more snow. the good news about the storm tomorrow night it's going to stay relatively weak. if you live in manhattan. two to four inches of snow and that's pretty much the story for people in long island and also into parts of connecticut and southern portions of new england. not too bad, but the storm right now is already producing big time headaches across portions of the southeast. we do have very heavy rain falling across portions of georgia, alabama, mississippi and we do have a flash flood threat out here with a number of watch
