our guests this morning include connecticut governor dan malloy. and the look back at the controversy over the new york primary. tens of thousands of voters suddenly finding out they had been dropped from voter rolls. we're gonna talk to new york city controller scott stringer, who is leading an investigation. good morning, everyone. i'm bill ritter. welcome to "upclose." the political slugfest for votes remains in the northeast for another weekend. voters in pennsylvania, maryland, delaware, rhode island, and connecticut going to the polls on tuesday. bernie sanders promising to push on, even though hillary clinton has taken a delegate lead of more than 700, if you include the delegates elected and pledged. we're gonna talk to new york city councilman jumaane williams, one of only three council members who supports senator sanders. but we begin this morning with connecticut governor dan malloy, who supports secretary clinton. the governor joins us this morning from hartford. governor, good morning to you. >> good morning, bill. great to be with yo

hillary clinton becomes the president, dan malloy will end up in her cabinet. he's an awful governor. >> i want to point out to the national audience he's the democratic governor of connecticut. in the time we have left, bernie sanders did well. four points or so from hillary clinton. why do you think he almost got her in connecticut? >> well, i think, hillary clinton is such an unlikable, untrustworthy candidate based on her long legacy of inconsistency and lack of leadership that she's being rejected by a large swath of democrat voters because, you know, she's -- she's not -- i don't think that people think she can win the general election. >> do you think she could win connecticut. >> donald trump is in eight points of hillary clinton after hundreds of millions of dollars of negative advertising against him and he is within eight points of her and that is without bernie taking a shot at her in connecticut. so i think connecticut is a prime state of the election. >> we thank you for joining us in the early morn ing hours. a spectacular night for your state. w

governor dan malloy, thank you for being here.he clinton campaign focusing on the sandy hook tragedy in your state and pits clinton against sanders on guns. take a look. >> my mom was the principal of sandy hook school. she was murdered trying to protect the children in her care from a gunman. no one is fighting harder to reform our gun laws than hillary clinton. she is the only candidate that has what it takes to take on the gun lobby. >> now, that same woman has criticized bernie sanders saying that he owes her and the other sandy hook families an apology because he voted for the legislation that shielded the gun industry from lawsuits. do you agree? do you think senator sanders owes the families of sandy hook, your constituents, an apology? >> look, i think he's wrong. i have said many times, he's dead wrong on this particular issue. you know, the gun industry is treated differently than every industry in america. we are a pharmaceutical state. pharmaceutical industry spent billions of dollars to develop new products to save pe

. >> dan malloy: i can tell you, they have a lower crime rate than we do. they have a lower recidivism rate than we do, and they're spending a lot less money on jails. >> whitaker: in the u.s., we've got much greater access to guns. we've got race as a factor and ethnicity as a factor. are the things being done here directly transferable to the united states? >> malloy: i think there are many things that are transferable. that doesn't mean that it's a perfect fit. but i think we have to challenge ourselves to do better. the same vibe, doesn't feel like the prisons in germany at all. >> john wetzel: little bit more intense, maybe. >> whitaker: little bit more intense. john wetzel is pennsylvania's secretary of corrections. three years ago, he went to germany looking for ideas to improve his prisons. he showed us around graterford, outside philadelphia. it's the largest maximum security prison in pennsylvania. 3,300 prisoners are packed in here. we were walking through an 80- year-old cell block. >> wetzel: i'll stop back. >> whitaker: when this inmate approa

. >>> connecticut governor dan malloy the recipient tonight of the john f. kennedy profile and courage award. malloy is being rewarded for resettling refugees after the terror attacks in paris. they credit malloy of, quote, taking a stand against hateful rhetoric from other governors and presidential candidates trying to ban refugees. >>> new at 5:00, a case of animal cruelty in new jersey. a van with puppies inside. the van was outside the just pupss store on route 17. the officers say they heard yelping and smelled urine and feces. 50 puppies and small dogs were rescued. the paramus health department has closed the store. the owner is facing charges of animal cruelty. >>> asking for help rebuilding following a fire that left more than 50 cats and dogs homeless. a shelter volunteer spotted the flames shooting from the back of the building and alerted the staff. the fire spread quickly because of the wind, severely damaging the building. >> wind did provide somewhat of an issue in putting out the fire because it was fanning the flames. there was plenty of he
