and now a discussion with emory university english professor dan sinykin about the life and literary career of cormac mccarthy. mr. sinicki sat down recently with book peters one and now joining us from emory university in atlanta is professor dan sinykin. here's his guest essay in the new york times in june. quote, cormac mccarthy had a remarkable literary career. it could never happen now. professor, why do you say that? cormac mccarthy's career could not happen now. well, his career depended on a situation in publishing that no longer exists. he required a editor at random house. albert erskine was a tremendous editor who worked with some of the giant figures of 20th century literature. in addition to mccarthy. he needed mccarthy needed erskine to support him through a series of books that were commercial failures. his first five books over more than 20 years. sold only a few thousand copies each and went out of print. that's not something that is sustainable at commercial publishers in the 21st century. and why is it that albert erskine stuck with mr. mccarthy? did he see something? were these books badly

campaign, and prosecutors are accusing him of impersonating dan meyer, who was at one time the chief of staff to the house speaker kevin mccarthybeing meyer, and then asking them for money to support the santos campaign. as a result, he's been charged with four counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft in the indictment that was just issued in u.s. district court in brooklyn. part of the evidence that prosecutors have in this case an e-mail that was sent from mealy to george santos where he actually brags about the fact that he was impersonating meyer, and said, essentially, along the lines that he needed to take big swings in order to get big results. this of course just a part of all the controversy that's surrounding santos himself, as you rightly point out, he's facing a number of federal charges himself and also facing an ethics investigation here in congress by the house of representatives. many republicans and a lot of democrats have called on santos to step down. he has refused to do so, and has said many times that he ultimately believes that the courts will exonerate him of any wrong doing. chris
