this, because this senate race in nebraska, republican incumbent deb fischer, right now down to dan osbornwho has never been in politics before, a mechanic. he had never been to washington before this year. he is not in any party. he doesn't call himself an independent either. right now he's winning this race. this would not mean an additional democrat in the u.s. senate should he pull this out, but it would mean one fewer republican. so that is something democrats are praying for as they see problems in these other races. we knew this was going to be an incredibly close and exciting race and yet we have another potential historic twist you couldn't imagine. but this is where we are right now in nebraska. geoff: i have to say i think your catholic school nuns would be very proud this evening. one issue we have not talked about yet is transgender rights. i raise it because the trump campaign and allied entities have spent more than $20 million on tv ads in battlegrounds attacking kamala harris on her past stances on transgender rights. this might not be a top priority issue for most voters,

republican senator deb fischer faces a really tough challenge from an independent candidate named dan osborneno democrat on the ballot, so osborne is running with support from democrats. he is running a very aggressive populace campaign against fisher, and fisher didn't take this race seriously for most of the year. that put her behind the eight ball with just a couple be cleft to go before election day when she woke up and realized she was probably losing that race in september or early october. since then we've seen republicans try to rush to her rescue. she stepped up her campaigning but an audit race, one that is going to be a lot closer than it has any business being in a state as republican as nebraska. host: let's go to your calls. rachel is in maryland on the line for democrats. caller: first of all i just want to say i command your memory recall because i just could never. i wanted to ask what your thoughts are on the third congressional race, and on the race between larry hogan and angela also brooks. host: marilyn races. guest: the third congressional race in maryland, i was actual

the independent challenger, dan osborn and this is too early to call in this senate race in nebraska of the two that were on the ballot. this is too early to call as the other senate election in nebraska has been called for the republican incumbent. >> now with the texas seat staying with ted cruz, nebraska is the only possible loss of a republican senate seat that remains for tonight, and that could be serious. >> are you surprised by the allred/red cruz result? >> no. you see someone look like they might be able to get it in texas and come close, but who knows. maybe it is next time. you can't be surprised if the democrat comes in second in n texas. you are not allowed to be surprised by that. but how much ground did they gain this time. >> it is the assumption that democratic change favors democratis. we know from texas, just because someone is brown or latino does not necessarily make them an aclight of the democratic party, and i think -- we don't know how it will shake down, but there will be really interesting analysis that needs to be done in terms of what coalitions are bein

we have dan osborn, an independent, who has not said which party he would caucus with. in fact, saying he would caucus with neither party. right now he holds a 10,000, almost 11,000 vote lead over incumbent republican deb fisher, 48% of the vote. and if he wins, it could change the map a little bit for what republicans need to take control of the senate. let's step back and give you a look at the balance of power. the raw numbers, democrats hold 49 seats, republicans one. there are 17 seats still up for grabs. you need 51 for control of the chamber, jake? >> that nebraska race is fascinating. the presidential race is moving west right now. and we are counting down to 11:00 p.m. eastern. that's when a total of 8 electoral votes are on the line. most of them are in california. polling places are about to close there and also in idaho and oregon and washington state. kamala harris is pushing on them to push her closer to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the white house. let's go back to abby phillip at white house campaign headquarters. you and jeff have been talking

you have dan osborne running there against the republican. it will be interesting to see what the balance is if you have a true independent win. at this point, it is not clear who he might caucus with or who he might give his vote to. going now to the house, this is really a nail biter. you have seen a number of these races be so close and not yet called. at this point, both democrats and republicans have reasons to feel good. democrats have picked up a seat in new york, new york's 22nd district. they have also made some good headway in other potential toss-up races. but you have seen republicans win in competitive seats in iowa and new jersey. if they're not pickups, but there are seats where the republican that was up for their re-election, this is stiff competition and they wound up now winning. of course, a lot left to go with the house. there is a chance we won't get a call until next week because there is always california. a number of competitive seats there. they take a while to call. but at this point, we're looking at whatever party
