>> it doesn't look like it, but let me just add to that with dan osborn.r either party but it will be difficult to get committee seats which are the life blood on capitol hill if he's not with any party, and we will see what happens when he gets up to capitol hill if he gets up to capitol hill, and that could be a difficult position to hold, and he would be along with susan collins and lisa markovski. >> i will say this, we should know a lot more about the house's composition tonight. we might not who is in control but there are a number of states, ohio, new york, virginia, that we will get an early look in this tight majority that we have been talking about for two years, josÉ. every seat counts. we will get a closer look, a more detailed look of who will be in control tonight when some of those seats, some of the polls close in the east coast states. new york, a bunch of seats are up for grab, and ohio, virginia, and we will get early signs. california could take a while. last cycle we had a race in california that was not decided until december. >> okay

because i think what dan osborne shows is if candidates do put country over both parties.a and if you're putting all your eggs in that basket we're going to fail again. we need new solutions. and eggs in that basket, you will need a new solution. if i were a democrat, i would be burning it all down and talking about new solutions. that is america's agendat. it has to be bigger than parties. it is time for a reset. the independent candidates are showing what is possible. >> i would love for them to sit around the table and to hear how they broke through with voters. what is your sense of what that looks like? >> i think it has to do with candor and really showing that you can transition from the military directly into politics without comcompromising. osborne fought for corporate people. be he looked different when he showed up to events. he was different around the edges. his heart came through and it didn't seem like he was checking with consultants when he says everything. and that is what resonates with trump. >> authenticity. >> and toughness. there is a gender dynamic

let's talk about dan osborne in the state of nebraska. that guy doesn't even have a party and he's raising the money on his own. i think there's a lot of's small dollar donors. >> the support for broad reform that allows small dollar donors to come in universal. in my u.s. senate race, i took a pledge to no longer directly solicit money. i would let the campaign handle it and i would not solicit money. i had the biggest fundraising week of my entire political career when a publicly pledged not to ask for money. the heartbeat, the hunger within the country to take back a true democracy for voters is there. >> one of the other things with his money floating around into your point, about peter thiel, what happens is the message of campaigns get hijacked. there is so much more money being spent on the outside than the inside. it is cheaper for the campaign to buy tv ads. if you have outside groups spending hundreds of millions of dollars, they are the ones that are driving the message or competing with the message of the candidates themselves

can now project that incumbent republican senator deb fischer will defeat independent challenger dan osbornblican pulling this out, and that means because of bernie moreno and west virginia, that it now goes over the top as far as the senate majority, but we don't know the final number yet. martha: we're still waiting for the tim sheehy race against jon tester in montana which is one that, i think, a lot of republicans felt was something they were relying on. so we'll see if that turns out to be the case, and it's not clear yet who would serve as the next senate majority leader. leader mitch mcconnell announced earlier this year that he would step down, so there's a lot of speculation about who might take that role and, of course, that'll be the next conversation to have for the leadership in the senate. but right now a 51-seat majority for the senate, 42 seats for democrats. and this is, this is a big deal for if president trump wins again, he needs this majority in the senate. we don't know what's going to happen in the house if, indeed -- bret: yeah. and we have seen some evidence that d

the party itself, but the supportive groups of the democratic party came in and started funding dan osborneking advertisements for him, and he was more associated with the democratic party nationally. that became a problem for him because he was not seen as somebody who was an outsider. why would the democratic party, nationally, have such a bad profile that it could have potentially lost him the race? >> are you asking me? >> yes. >> i have heard a lot about dan and spend time with him. he had a meticulously tied to the campaign and he wanted people to see them as truly independent. he is progressive on a lot of labor issues, on quite a few issues, but more conservative on some other things and did not want to be the face of the national democratic party. this goes way back to when joe biden was a candidate all the way through the campaign. this is one of the deeper things, i have spent a lot of time traveling to what are referred to as red states, and seeing democrats come very close to him either running as democrats were sometimes as an independent. very close to winning. but not quite

we have dan osborn, an independent, who has not said which party he would caucus with. in fact, saying he would caucus with neither party. right now he holds a 10,000, almost 11,000 vote lead over incumbent republican deb fisher, 48% of the vote. and if he wins, it could change the map a little bit for what republicans need to take control of the senate. let's step back and give you a look at the balance of power. the raw numbers, democrats hold 49 seats, republicans one. there are 17 seats still up for grabs. you need 51 for control of the chamber, jake? >> that nebraska race is fascinating. the presidential race is moving west right now. and we are counting down to 11:00 p.m. eastern. that's when a total of 8 electoral votes are on the line. most of them are in california. polling places are about to close there and also in idaho and oregon and washington state. kamala harris is pushing on them to push her closer to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the white house. let's go back to abby phillip at white house campaign headquarters. you and jeff have been talking

you have dan osborne running there against the republican. it will be interesting to see what the balance is if you have a true independent win. at this point, it is not clear who he might caucus with or who he might give his vote to. going now to the house, this is really a nail biter. you have seen a number of these races be so close and not yet called. at this point, both democrats and republicans have reasons to feel good. democrats have picked up a seat in new york, new york's 22nd district. they have also made some good headway in other potential toss-up races. but you have seen republicans win in competitive seats in iowa and new jersey. if they're not pickups, but there are seats where the republican that was up for their re-election, this is stiff competition and they wound up now winning. of course, a lot left to go with the house. there is a chance we won't get a call until next week because there is always california. a number of competitive seats there. they take a while to call. but at this point, we're looking at whatever party
